20-ish years ago, my old band The Servant released our debut album. And, as I’m back releasing new music again as an artist, I want to mark the occasion, but not just with a typical remastering or whatever. I thought it might be fun to open the Servant trunk, dust them down, and try on some of those old musical clothes again. To see how they feel all these years later. I mad an EP of four songs. And we’ve plucked one out, Orchestra, to be also a single.
I didn’t want to just slavishly reproduce the originals, I wanted to bring them into the spirit of my present musical world, but with maybe a few extra spices. So it’s still, one guitar, some tape drones, pots and pans meet machines drums, but, also, I reached out to some old friends to bring some extra fresh freshness - ha.
First,
@thomasroussel , the string wizard of fashion (just ask
@pharrell ), conjured up some beautiful, majestic, swoon-some string arrangements, that we recorded one day last year in my house, with an octet of Paris’ finest musicians.
And secondly, the true force of nature that is
@watchoutforthetornado has given her unique voice and lyricism. Over the last 10 years we’ve joked, grown (OMG especially her!) oh yeah, and, sometimes actual worked together - ha. Having watched and heard her sing and write in the studio countless times, it is an extra special thrill to cross the divide and get to sing next to her.
It’s a funny coincidence, but both these friends have gone on similarly dreamlike journeys in their careers, from when I first met them to where they both are now. I’m so touched you both gave your time and monstrous talents to this project. Thank you. I love you both.
