This patchwork rug is kinda the perfect metaphor for my fiber art last year. It’s an unplanned mish-mash of color and texture that comes together in a surprisingly happy way. I used almost all of my handspun yarn (drop spindle and wheel) on this, and filled in the rest with what I had on hand. This was my first time using hand spun yarn in a punch needle project and I LOVE how it turned out. I got the roving at my local yarn store, @friendsandfiberworks . It’s made from one skein of variegated @malabrigoyarn roving. and I changed directions while punching to get the checkered effect. The back is made from a pair of @universalstandard jeans that I wore to death, but now get a new life!!! Back in May my mom had a health scare and I had to head up to NY. While she has made a great recovery, It was a hard road, and it was such a comfort to have my drop spindle with me to keep my hands and mind busy. My mind tends to spiral, so while sitting by her hospital bed, or standing in the hallway of the ICU, or alone at night… I was able to send my focus into my hands and not the worst case scenario. I was so lucky to be staying near @annieandco.nyc . Their staff was kind, knowledgeable and super helpful… and the store was 😍🤤 just unbelievable. They helped me pick out some beautiful roving, and I probably went back to their store four times during the trip to get more supplies and show off the yarn I made. The last trip was super special because as time progressed and I was getting better and better at spinning, my mom was also healing and getting better. I decided I wanted to try to coil spin some yarn, and my mom (now released from the hospital) decided she wanted to go with me. We had a great time walking, browsing, and finding some stunning yarn for me to experiment with. Now that I’m home, with a ton of handmade yarn that has a pretty decent consistency, I’m finally able to do what I was hoping, use my yarn for rug punching. What a difference a few days makes! I used my drop spindle to create these yarns over the last few days using a chain ply. You can clearly see how throughout these three attempts, my consistency gets better and better! I can’t wait till I nail the right thickness for my rug punching! I used my first few attempts at hand spinning in this precious little weaving. Look at all that texture! While I think this is pretty cool, I think I need to return to basics before I keep spinning recycled yarn. I’m going to work a bit on my technique and consistency with some high quality roving before I keep going with the short scraps.
