This week’s student takeover is Teviah! Teviah is a fourth-year student studying International Development Studies. She moved abroad to Bergen, Norway for a winter term exchange.
Here’s what she has to say about her time on exchange:
My favourite memory from abroad was going on a week-long camping trip at the end of my semester. We rented a car, went wild camping, and explored different parts of the country.
The main thing I learned is how special it is to make friends with people from other countries. I now have some of my best friends all around the world, and that is so special to me. Putting yourself out there is always scary, but the discomfort is temporary, and it is so worth it.

Exchange insights from this week’s student ✨
Q: What courses are you taking while on exchange? 📚🌍
A: My courses at GEM were chosen for me, which is an important consideration when choosing where to study abroad. Since I’m at a business school with a focus on sustainability and international business, my classes reflect that really well. I’m also taking French, which has been so helpful when it comes to navigating daily life in France. 🇫🇷✨
Courses: Sustainable Entrepreneurship, Social Responsibility in International Business, International Macroeconomics, Geopolitics, Research Methods & Design, and French.

Our next student takeover is Ada! Ada is a fourth-year student studying Neuroscience with a minor in Management. She went abroad in her third-year winter semester to study at the University of Leeds.
Here’s what she has to say about her time on exchange:
I went on exchange because I wanted to experience living like a local in a different country. I picked Leeds because I wanted to be more central in Europe, which made it incredibly easy to travel during my studies. I lived on campus in Charles Morris Hall and met so many other exchange students through that. Leeds also has a lot of clubs, I met most of my British friends through the clubs I joined.
Living in a different country on your own teaches you a lot about yourself. I had amazing experiences, learned a lot about the world, and met lifelong friends from all over the world. I could not recommend exchange more!!

Before you go abroad, make sure you look into your visa requirements ✈️
In many cases, exchange students will need a student visa or equivalent to enter their host country, register at their host institution, and stay for the full academic term. Be sure to check messages from your host institution and review the website of your host country’s consulate or embassy in Canada for the most accurate information.
Some countries allow online applications, while others may require part of the process to be completed in person.
