Radenko Milak
Kunsthalle Darmstadt
2014
A look back at 365, Radenko Milak’s exhibition at Kunsthalle Darmstadt, with León Krempel, Director of Kunsthalle Darmstadt, who also curated our first exhibition of the artist, BIG TIME at PRISKA PASQUER GALLERY in Cologne shortly before.
Nothing but black pigment, left on paper after the water evaporates, and shadows forming within its rough surface, the means Radenko Milak employs may appear archaic, yet they demand precision, control, and a delicate touch. Corrections are nearly impossible. The success of each sheet remains as uncertain as the outcome of the first manned moon landing.
Each work refers to a specific historical date, some familiar, others obscure, or entirely unknown. Rather than confronting us with the events themselves, Milak points to the fact that each viewer recognizes different moments as meaningful.
War and peace, art and culture, science and technology come together in a singular kind of calendar. Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia, again and again the Balkans, natural disasters, and the pursuit of space, history as both visual experience and material for reflection. From the Reformation to the resignation of the Pope.
