Flyovers involving the Uganda People’s Defence Air Force (UPDAF) and Police Aviation units have been observed over Kampala following the swearing-in of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his 7th elective term. Several helicopters, including military and police aircraft, conducted coordinated flights over the city, displaying national and NRM flags during the exercise.

UPDATE: A train has been involved in a crash with a Sino truck at the railway crossing near Nsambya subway, overturning the vehicle and spilling concrete onto an oncoming Toyota Land Cruiser. It is not yet clear whether there are any fatalities or serious injuries. Police are on site clearing the wreckage.

UPDATE: Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke says the aircraft seen flying over different parts of the country are rehearsal flights by the UPDAF (Uganda People’s Defence Air Force) ahead of the May 12, 2026 presidential swearing-in ceremony, during which they will stage an aerial display.
Rusoke adds that authorities have not received any reports or claims of broken glass, contrary to allegations circulating among members of the public, and urged residents to get accustomed to the aircraft operations.

UPDATE: Following the fatal road crash in Nwoya District involving a Nile Star Bus on May 4, 2026, which claimed at least seven lives, the State Minister for Transport, Fred Byamukama, has suspended the operations of Nile Star Bus Limited for 30 days. The suspension takes effect today at 6pm. Announcing the decision, Minister Byamukama said the company has been involved in several fatal accidents over the past year, which have cumulatively resulted in 56 deaths and 91 injuries across 11 crashes.

UPDATE: Ugandan authorities have arrested a suspected transnational criminal, a resident of Gasiza Parish, Nyakabande Sub-county in Kisoro District, along with two Nigerian nationals. The arrests followed an Interpol alert and public tip-offs about suspicious behaviour. Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi confirmed the intelligence-led operation, saying investigators are examining possible links to serious offences, including drug trafficking. Security agencies recovered a firearm and military gear during the operation.
