Here's a small selection of some of the animations I worked on last year at Pomeroy Art Academy @pomeroyartacademy For the past two years, I've been receiving 1on1 mentorship from one of the worlds most talented and experienced animators, the legendary John Pomeroy @johnpomeroyart at Pomeroy Art Academy @pomeroyartacademy , known for his extensive work with Disney, Don Bluth Productions, Warner Bros. etc... At first, getting on camera with someone of such stature, to show my humble attempts at learning this incredibly difficult, at times frustrating, yet, enormously gratifying artform of hand drawn animation, was a very daunting thing to do, but a decision I will never regret! Having the opportunity to go back and forth and pick the brain of someone who possess such a vast reservoir of knowledge boosted my rate of learning beyond my expectations. For anyone looking to learn classical hand drawn animation, Pomeroy Art Academy @pomeroyartacademy is the best place to be right now! Look out for the upcoming six-week intensive course on environmental design, beginning May 19th! #pomeroyartacademy #handdrawnart #animation #2danimation #cartoons

Here's a 360 degree animated turnaround of a character I designed during the last intensive at @pomeroyartacademy with @johnpomeroyart . A deceptively difficult assignment. As there is no change of shape, no squash or stretch, animating a rotating stationary subject demands even more attention toward accurate solidity. For me, getting the perspective right on the foot placement was particularly challenging. #drawing #2danimation #animation #turnaroundsheet #characterdesign

***THROWBACK THURSDAY *** MY FIRST WALK CYCLE. Here's the very first walkcycle that I did after enrolling at Don Bluth University a few years ago. Sometimes it feels like I'm stuck on a plateau in my artistic journey. I remember being quite proud of this cycle, so it's reassuring to look back at it now, and know that I can do a whole lot better. The animation isn't half bad though, but there's definitely some room for improvement in the draftsmanship department😅 #drawing #animation #walkcycle #2danimation #handdrawnanimation

Character design was the theme in this intensive at @pomeroyartacademy with @johnpomeroyart One of the assignments was to draw a 360 turn-around model sheet of your own original character. Here's my submission! Stay tuned for an animated turn-around 🙂 #drawing #animation #2danimation #modelsheet #characterdesign

I went for an evening walk with my dog, Ivi, and sister, @fleurdeabsurdes , and we were met by this incredible sight! The aurora borealis, the northern light. It was moving across the sky in a mesmerising wave-like motion. I've seen it a few times in my life, but never this strong, and this was right outside our front door! #northernlights #auroraborealis #Norway #epicnightsky

An Elven Ranger I painted inspired by the fantasy posters everyone had in their rooms when I grew up in the 80's. I can see some Kael'thas (Warcraft) and Link (Zelda) influence made it's way into it aswell. It was refreshing to do some color work again, and really fun to experiment with dual light sources. #painting #fantasyart #warcraft #fantasy #elf

It's been almost 2 years since I began studying animation under the legendary John Pomeroy @johnpomeroyart . Always positive, always inspiring, and tremendously insightful. I am surprised at how much I've learned and grown in such a short time, and I could not have asked for a better mentor. I made this little drawing to him, as a Christmas Present, and a sign of appreciation for sharing from his vast knowledge and experience in hand drawn animation with future generations. If you're interested in learning traditional animation from a master of the craft, I highly recommend checking out Pomeroy Art Academy. @pomeroyartacademy . #drawing #animation #handdrawnanimation #pomeroyartacademy

Happy belated International Animation Day, everyone! The Illusion of Life likely needs no introduction. Written by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, two of Walt Disney's Nine Old Men, and, said to be the greatest personality animators of all time, is possibly the most important and elaborate book written on the subject of animation. It not only details the basic, and not-so-basic principles of animation, but also tells the story of how the geniuses at Walt Disney Studios, essentially, invented Personality animation all the way back in the 30's and onwards, and created some of the most beautiful animation seen to this day. It has always amazed me how Walt was able to gather all those brilliant indivuduals in one place, and its a delight to read how the artists at the studio would experiment and eagerly share their discoveries with each other, and through friendly competition develop the terms and techniques we today call the "basic twelve", and so much more. If you only ever intend to buy one book on the subject of animation, look no further, this is the one you want. And if not, you still need this! The Illusion of Life is often referred to as The Bible of Animation, but should be an interesting read for non artists aswell. An absolute essential! #drawing #animation #animationart #art #pencildrawing #sketching #handdrawnanimation #pencilart #2danimation #traditionalanimation #characterart #characteranimation #personalityanimation #book #animationtutorial #disney #disneyanimation #frankthomas #olliejohnston #nineoldmen #theillusionoflife #animationbook #animationday #internationalanimationday

For this weeks book report, I've chosen a title that is the polar opposite of last weeks entry in terms of accessibility. This is a very dense and highly complex book, but is also the most thorough title I have ever found on draftsmanship. Misleadingly named "How to Draw" is written by Scott Robertson, who uses perspective drawing to design vehicles for big industry franchises like Star Wars, aswell as for the US. Army. I say misleading, because this is book is not for meant for beginners. It is a monument that mainly deals with teaching how to draw correct perspective, and if you are looking to improve your perspective and solid drawing skills, this is the greatest resource you could possibly stumble across. Through the excercises presented here, Scott will teach you how to think like an architect when drawing! Learn how to set up 1-point, 2-Point and 3 -Point perspective grids, 5 point curvilinear, fish eye lens, grids. Learn about the cone of vision, and how to avoid perspective distortion. Learn how to divide, scale, mirror, rotate and multiply dimensions in perspective. Learn how to simulate various camera lenses in your drawings. By the end of this book, you will be able to construct any complex form in correct perspective, from your imagination. How to Draw, by Scott Robertdon, is not an easy undertaking, but is an incredibly rewarding one, and if you like to challenge yourself, I wholeheartedly reccomend this book! #drawing #animation #pencildrawing #art #animationart #2danimation #pencilart #sketching #perspective #perspectivedrawing #howtodraw #scottrobertson

I've been asked to do some book reviews from my animation book collection, so I figured I'd start with the one I've found myself frequently returning to, more than any of the other books in my collection: Character Animation Crash Course, by legendary Disney animator Eric Goldberg. What makes this book essential for your collection is this: Eric initially felt it unnecessary to write an animation tutorial book, as it had already been brilliantly done with The Illusion of Life, and The Animators Survival kit. But he realised that there were quite a few techniques that weren't mentioned in either, so he made a point out of including everything he knew that wasn't already explained in every other tutorial book. Character Animation Crash Course is jam packed with tips, tricks and gimmicks that will improve your animations dramatically, and you will likely not find these lessons anywhere else. And, as @theartofjona also points out below, every tip and principle is beautifully demonstrated by simple, but very expressive drawings. I keep this book at hand at all times, and it is, without a doubt, an absolute must have for all aspiring animators! #animationtutorial #drawing #animation #art #pencildrawing #animationart #2danimation #pencilart #handdrawnanimation #traditionalanimation #ericgoldberg #animationbook #characteranimation #characteranimationcrashcourse
