Quatrefoil- Cast iron, bronze, powder coat. 2025. . I’ve been experimenting blending digital fabrication with traditional sculpture and fabrication methods to create this work. Starting from a physical sample, I digitized and modulated the form. Inspired by the vaulting systems in gothic architecture, but sampled from cheap cap rail used in production ironwork. The idea was really derived from desperation, trying to escape the mundane or monotonous aspects of making production work. Standing at the bandsaw looking at drops of material and thinking about the thousand other more interesting things I’d rather be making and how one material can have infinite outcomes. There was something there that connected to a lot of my previous work, focusing on harvesting the information from found objects and collaging them into new forms. Digitizing this information allowed me to play with forms in space with relatively low stakes. The forms were 3d printed, invested in ceramic shell, and cast in iron. Bronze caps were cnc cut which tie the forms together. The Magnum blue sparkle powdercoat was inspired by the thing that got me interested in metal fabrication from an early age- chopper bikes. I grew up going to Easy rider bike shows with my dad. I wanted to be a bike builder as a kid, and I had so many notebooks filled with designs I would draw, loaded with tacky flames, skulls and lots or sparkle. I felt like it came full circle. A big shoutout to All Cote Coatings for taking the time to sit down with me and see all the possibilities. We had half the shop looking at swatches, but thank you Tony for pushing me to the magnum blue. They very graciously donated their services and I cannot thank them enough. . . . #sculpture #ironcasting #foundry #metalsculpture #gothic #architecture #contemporaryart #3dprinting #metalfabrication #digitalfabrication #rhino

We’re excited to share our most recent project that we did for @gwhomedetroit . We created a floral sculpture made of forged and fabricated aluminum for the awning of their new store in Detroit. It was great to incorporate so much color into our metal work. We really enjoyed the process and are proud to leave our mark downtown. Go check out the new location. . . #sculpture #metalwork #aluminum #aluminumwelding #forging #blacksmith #blacksmithing #flowers #detroit @gardnerwhite

Inverter. Forged & fabricated steel, paint. This work is constructed by fabricating three pieces of C channel that have been forged and “inverted” on itself to construct this vessel like form. . . . #blacksmithing #metalart #sculpture #metalsculpture #contemporaryart #ironwork #welding

Monolith. Cast iron, concrete, steel. 24x10x68” A sculpture I finished up last year composed of several cast and fabricated components. This work collages a variety of elements harnessed from packing waste and structural steel. I’ve always found some architectural potential in these forms. There’s a topography that mimics so many aspects of infrastructure and urban design. There’s something innately human about this material while simultaneously having this extraterrestrial quality to it, thus the reference to the monolith and its presence in sci fi. I feel like it sums up our dissacociative relationship with commerce and the way it reduces us from human to consumer. I hope that this work serves as an archive in some capacity, cataloging our transformation in geologic time. . . #extraterrestrials #homosapiens #sculpture #foundry #metalfabrication #infrastructure #scifi

Sharing the process of creating my most recent sculpture from inspiration to final form. I think in the metalsmithing and blacksmithing world people have this notion that using digital methods is cheating. I think it’s just another tool like all the others. I love being able to navigate both approaches to making sculpture. Ultimately, it’s the form that I’m after whether that be forging, casting, fabrication or printing, there are many possibilities in how to get to the end goal. DAM GALA 8 Participating Artist @daaronc “Much of my work focuses on aspects of consumer culture, geography, and infrastructure. I talk a lot about artifacts and what we leave behind, and the information that can be derived from those artifacts. There is an absurdity to the ecological crisis that we have manufactured for ourselves. My sculptures are a reflection on the infrastructural mechanisms that maintain this crisis in perpetuity. They act as a record, a simulated fossil or petrification of our relationship with consumerism, disposability, convenience and comfort.” -Aaron Deshields Detroit Artists Market Gala Art Auction, taking place on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at DAM, from 6-9 pm! I’ve been reading sculpture magazine for over a decade. Never thought I’d see my work featured in it though. It can be found in the January/February 2024 issue alongside several other talented young/ emerging sculptors who received the Outstanding Student Achievement awards . Thanks @intsculpturectr for the recognition. . . . #artpublication #sculpture #emergingartist #contemporarysculpture #contemporaryart #castiron
