Sometime in 2017, I saw a self portrait made by @_nuragarba . An expressive painting with shades of blue in the background. I remember I thought, Ah, How are painters this good?. The painting and the artist inspired me a lot then and it influenced how I look at art, and color.
Recently I’ve come to appreciate the courage one needs in other to create art that is true to oneself and that shares the essence of your creative spirit.
This process has happened from creating art alongside Mallam Nura, and some other really amazing artists I worked with last year, Aisha and Rahila comes to mind here 🫶🏽.
I learnt so much and appreciate them all. ❤️

“The Refined Horseman”
Basheera Ohuni Abdulsalam
Watercolor on Acid free paper
8 x 11 in.
2025
I am reminded by my first meeting of a horseman, a Durbar rider, his pose regal. His adornments. The turban and Baban Riga colorful. It is a sight that influences awe, the stately parade. The dust, me and the crowds watching.
This piece depicts a young man, draped in a red turban covering most of his facial features. I find that his gaze is intense, the light influence warm. This piece was a nice welcome back to this medium.
I am so excited to be painting again. ✨.

Leaves are a visual marker of time and transformations. They never stay the same. ✨
These elements found in nature are oftentimes unnoticed, yet are part of the collective eco system.
The inspiration for this piece is tied to the similarities I found between leaves and free flowing water, in the sense of their movement.
With This piece, I pondered on the refection of what it means to witness nature. Ephemeral as it is. A beauty always changing. ❤️🌹

This painting is dear to me, using colours that are reminiscent of warmth, and love, I made this composition that details and explores the Hausa culture, the beauty one would see during Durbar festivals and processions.
Yerima is a piece that i started in Zaria and I committed to fully exploring, the Colour choice, Palette knife technique. My choice to paint this in a style unique to me. All of it were processes that reminded me of why I love painting. ❤️✨
What are your thoughts on this piece?. 🫶🏽

The power of the Feminine, imagine the pull of the moon and ocean tides.
One in the sky, one on earth, still connected. ✨
A woman holds magic. And as inspired by poetry, songs, books, art. Women remain muses.
“Each and every day, some of us make our way, through the ebb and flow of the turning tide”. Maya Angelou “I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart: I am, I am, I am.” Sylvia Plath
Women remain the eternal muses, their essence a guiding light for creatives and dreamers alike.❤️

Art is a journey that speaks to everyone, and when I got to Zaria, I really came to appreciate it.
I saw drawings and paintings that inspired me, seeing the works of Sir Fidex, Mallam Nura and Anna, really made me pause, inevitably love art more.
Over time I started creating and their tutelage helped. I recently met sir Fidelis again and his take on art, practice, and how interesting this journey is, was one I found memorable. Thank you for sharing!✨

Caustival was memorable for me for a lot of reasons, my heart is warm and full writing this, And it’s because of everyone who took time out to attend, support and encourage me.
These ladies have my heart! ❤️
I exhibited two paintings that speak on Breakthroughs and Freedom. How they are connected. How progress demands our voice.
I enjoyed every bit of Caustival, the film selection; thought provoking. The Exhibition space!, the warmth and the people.
Thank you for having me @gatefieldcaustival . This was amazing!.❤️
