“From Coast to Coast” by DĂ©sirĂ© Eli-Zafoe is a moving photo collage series that tells the stories of people living along the shoreline — from Ada, Elmina, Keta, Anyanui, to Accra. It’s part of our ongoing “Home Through Participation” exhibition by the Akutso Collective, currently showing at Nuku Studio – Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale. Drawing on personal family history, oral traditions, and local wisdom, DĂ©siré’s work invites viewers to experience the beauty, struggle, and identity of coastal communities — far beyond what the eye can see. Since 2019, DĂ©sirĂ© has been documenting this journey. Alongside the collages, he presents the short documentary Anomansa, which revisits the oral history of Elmina, once known as Anomansa, and the legend of Kwaa Mankwa, who discovered the town after following the Benya stream. The film takes viewers on a present-day journey through Elmina, connecting the past and present through memory and place. With fishing nets hanging in the space, the exhibition brings the spirit of the sea right into Tamale — a city without a coastline, yet deeply connected through story, heritage, and resilience. About the artist: DĂ©sirĂ© Eli-Zafoe is a Ghanaian filmmaker, photographer and a designer with a background in technology, marketing and communications. He has worked on Ghana’s first National Pavilion at the 58th Venice International Art Exhibition-la Biennale Di Venizia, the Mobile Museum and the Pan-African Cultural Encyclopedia projects. Currently, DĂ©sirĂ© is exploring filmmaking, photography and art in connection with Afro futurism mainly in Ada Foah in the Greater Accra Region and other communities along the coast. “From Coast to Coast” is more than a visual archive — it’s an invitation to remember, question, and celebrate the threads that hold our communities together. Visit us during our opening hours Tuesday to Saturday 11am-6pm. “Home Through Participation” will be on display until end of May. Photo credit (1, 2) @d.z.ray (3) @ofoeamegavie (4) @buenorteyokor

It’s time for a recap — What a beautiful opening of “Home through Participation” at Nuku Studio - Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale. The title truly came to life last Saturday, 3 May as the exhibition explores through photography and interactive installations what home can mean and be. People came not just to see, but to engage — bringing open hearts, curiosity, and a sincere interest to exchange ideas, experiences, and perspectives. The artists shared how meaningful it was to experience this kind of genuine connection. They agreed that it wouldn’t have been the same in Accra, and they’re deeply grateful for the warmth, energy, and sincere conversations that filled the space. A huge thank you to Tamale for showing up and making this exhibition opening what it was. And to the artists of the Akutso collective @akutso — DĂ©sirĂ© Eli-Zafoe @d.z.ray , Agbongua J. Kwadwo Buenortey @buenorteyokor , Ofoli Kwei @ofoli_kwei , Ofoe Amegavie @ofoeamegavie , and Annertey @annertey — who worked tirelessly to install the entire exhibition in just two days. Last but not least, we’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Nene Adi Ngwa @neneadingwa , a priest from Ada, who made the long journey to Tamale to open the exhibition by pouring libation. Thank you for generously sharing your knowledge with us — both adults and children left with new experiences. All in all, artists and audience left with something valuable, and we’re excited to keep this conversation going. In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more about the artists and their works. If you’re in Tamale, make sure to visit — the exhibition is open until May 31st during our opening hours Tuesday to Saturday 11 am - 6 pm. See you then! 🏁🏁 Another weekend of learning & more knowledge. This one hit different cuz just about 2 months ago I could barely even walk after a bad knee injury playing football. The search is indeed always internal, aiming for the best of ourselves with each passing day. Word to Nip, the marathon continues 🏁🏁 Gratitude for a good run @millenniummarathonofficial with @nayo4u @kqtheartist @tnn_zion
