Behind the (book) scenes! All Her Ghosts didn't start that way. It actually went through a number of titles before finding the one that stuck. Draft 1: We Feral Dead Scrapped it because I ultimately decided it was too confusing. The main characters aren't technically dead. They have living flesh bodies... but not heartbeats. Not easily categorized as either living or dead, they're actually a ✨secret third thing✨. (You'll have to read to the end of the book to find out what 😉) Draft 2: In The Asphodel I liked the idea of a title based on a line from the book and this line is a doozy (a fragment of Sebastian gently explaining his undying loyalty to Persephone), but out of context, idk. It didn't spark joy. Draft 3: And All Her Ghosts Another line from the book! This was the title the book had when we sold it. Ended up altering it because... Draft 4: All Her Ghosts Long titles are awkward to typeset in a striking way on covers. We decided to cut the extra flourish "and" to make it pop. Bonus: The title is based on a Shakespeare line the main character misquotes. "Hell is empty and all the devils are here," from The Tempest. Only, in her case, it's that Hell is empty and ~all her ghosts~ are here. The title also happens to be a tongue in cheek bit of nerdery I find particularly delightful. When we're talking about underworlds, my favorite is from Norse mythology, known as Niflheim, Hel (one L), or Helheim. Basically Helheim means "Hel's hold/home/world," Hel being the ruler of the underworld, a woman both flesh and corpse, neither fully alive or dead.
