For the past two years, right after Christmas, Iāve headed up to the Santa Cruz Mountains to work with
@campyatc āan incredible organization teaching kids acting and filmmaking. š²š¬
Each year, multiple teams come together to shoot short films in just one weekāa whirlwind of creativity and collaboration thatās truly inspiring. In summer, Camp YATC also runs a theater program, making the arts accessible to kids year-round.
What makes this place special is its unwavering commitment to inclusivity: every child is welcomed with open arms, in an environment thatās accepting, non-judgmental, and full of laughter and love. Itās the best kind of set to be on.
The process is intensive yet rewarding: we split into small teams with 5ā8 kids acting and 2ā3 kids learning as crew. I serve as Director, Cinematographer, Gaffer, Key Gripāoften all at once. A student director shadows me, and all the kids not only act but also learn the filmmaking process hands-on. Despite the many moving parts, Iām always amazed at how smoothly everything comes together.
Though Iām usually the quiet, reserved one, what I seeāand deeply appreciateāis a community of amazing, creative kids and dedicated adults radiating positive energy.
Special thanks to my friend
@soundguyjimmy , who invited me to Camp YATC a couple of years ago. Not knowing what to expect, I said yesāmy dad was an educator for 38 years, and it felt right. Iām so grateful I did, and that I continue to be part of the incredible work led by Shawn Ryan, Valerie Dohrer, and the entire team.
I hope you enjoy this short film:
