Start of the Seminar “Filmemachen als magische Praxis” The first magical encounter we had! Led by Sabrina Labis and Prof. Nina Fischer Description for the seminar: In this seminar we will explore filmmaking as a form of magical practice from a media philosophical approach. What parallels can be drawn? How do cinematic techniques function like occult practices that alter perception, create realities, and transform consciousness? Inspired by Vilém Flusser’s reflections on the camera as a “magical apparatus” and the “magical character of the image”, we will investigate how the processes of filmmaking – from editing and cinematography to screenwriting and directing – can be interpreted as magical practices with their own rituals and rules. Is the screenplay a spellbook that shapes visions? Are the director’s instructions a magic spell? Is the camera an instrument that channels energy? The seminar combines theoretical reflection, collective screenings, and practical exercises. A key component is a five-day study trip to Gutshof Sauen in Brandenburg, where we will intensively work on these questions and develop our own cinematic spells. This seminar is for anyone interested in experimental approaches and exploring the unknown, intuitive, and mystical aspects of their own filmmaking practice.

MEISTERSCHÜLERIN PRESENTATION Kunst und Medien / Experimental Film at @udkberlin Guide Prof. Nina Fischer Symbiotic Assemblages: Towards an Interspecies Memory Symbiotic Assemblages is a 16mm installation that explores the symbiopoetics and symbiopolitics of lichens as a metaphor for new possible futures and forms of interspecies collaboration. Through 16mm projectors and digital assemblages with 3D scanning, the work merges the image of a human body with that of a lichen, blurring the boundaries between organisms and questioning our relationship with nature in a world shaped by ecological crisis. The project stems from a reflection on the cinematic medium: we create machines to replicate and represent the world we are destroying. Within this paradox, moving images become a space for negotiation between the analog and the digital, the human and the non-human, the living and the inanimate. Thus, Symbiotic Assemblages proposes an interspecies memory where coexistence is not only possible but necessary to imagine new ways of inhabiting time and matter. 🔹 Sound design: Sebastian Cifuentes @cifues 🔹 3D support: Lucian Meister @lucian.a.meister 🔹 16mm print with @antoniocastles 📸 @pablohassmann

: Meet Fischer & el Sani and the curator C. Nippe during Berlinale 21. / 22. Feb., 4.30pm - 6pm at Schwartzsche Villa, Berlin. Metakosmia - Nina Fischer & Maroan el Sani Schwartzsche Villa open daily during Berlinale from 10am - 6pm. Metakosmia is about the survival in the near future in an environment that has become uninhabitable due to extreme weather phenomena. The narrative perspective is that of an ant, oberserving a teenage girl, who lives alone at Biosphere 2, an artifical habitat in the Arizona desert. Biosphere 2 is a giant glashouse, build in 1991 with the purpose of creating a self-sustainable eco system independent of the outside world. Eight visionary artists and scientists experimented with living in this artificial biotope for two years to prove that life in a closed system is possible in the long term. The spectacular project, whose investors hoped would provide insights into human survival on lunar or martian bases, was considered a failure at the time, becuase the carbon dioxide level rose unexpectedly high. Today, scientists of the University of Arizona are conducting research on climate resilience at Biosphere 2, as our society is facing significant impacts from climate change. Fischer & el Sani are interested in Biosphere 2 for it’s role today, in the age of the 6th great mass extinction, as apilot program for survival on Earth itself, and not, as the media communicated 30 years age, as an experiment for life on other planets. On occasion of our exhibition Metakosmia at Schwartzsche Villa Berlin, we cordially invite you to a screening of 3 of our film-works, Cloud Alchemy (2021), I live in fear after March 11 (2023), and Dynamis (2014) followed by an Q&A with Anna Lena Seiser (n.b.k. Video Forum) On Saturday, Dec 7, 4-6 pm Schwartzsche Villa, Grunewaldstraße 55, 12165 Berlin Our exhibition Metakosmia will be open on Saturday from 10 am - 6.30 pm Metakosmia (2024) is a fictional narrative of a future in which survival is only possible under glass domes, due to climate change. The narrative perspective is that of an ant, observing a teenage girl, who lives alone at Biosphere 2, an artificial habitat in the Arizona desert, a massive greenhouse complex, built in 1991 with the purpose of creating a self-sustainable ecosystem independent of the outside world. Screening program: Cloud Alchemy (2021) is posing key questions in relation to climate change and its potential to split the society. I live in fear after March 11 (2013) is focusing on the exploration of fears and uncertainties surrounding the nuclear catastrophy and ongoing threat of radiation. Dynamis (2014) Fischer & el Sani asked citizens of Thessaloniki to take part in a patience exercise, developing a collective cultural performance. @studiofischerelsani @kulturhaus.schwartzsche.villa @christine_nippe @kommunale_galerien_berlin @neuerberlinerkunstverein
