Tomassina writes : June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, an opportunity to learn about the unique cultures, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis. It's a time to honour the stories, achievements and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to impact the evolving Canada. As treaty people in Nova Scotia, it is important that we continue to reflect on the history and contributions of Indigenous people. This work requires us to reflect on the impacts that colonial policies and practices had – and continue to have on Indigenous communities and the work to be done to achieve true reconciliation. As we continue to fight to get back into schools, we need to remember, since Indigenous Student Support Workers are unable to advocate for students and families, Indigenous students continue to fall behind in a schools system that was never designed for them in the first place. The gaps continue to grow, and they are suffering from oppressive colonial policies that are disproportionately suspending them, without anyone to advocate for their rights. It is time for the government to stop treating Indigenous students as second-class citizens, and allow them to thrive in an education system where they feel welcomed, supported, and safe. They feel none of this right now. Do the right thing, you have a Treaty responsibility to do so.

I take him to the bottom of our street every day to see them drive by. He starts asking “MJ (his best bud), when” from the moment we wake up until I tie his shoes and we start our walk down the hill.
He loves his friends. He misses them.
It breaks my heart every day. I see his lip curl up as the bus drives away. He knows he’s being treated differently.

They are passionate, thoughtful, kind and caring individuals. As lifelong learners, they continuously improve their ongoing education and knowledge, challenging their practice, in order to better engage children, families and communities. Our ECEs have a deep respect for the child, their rights, and their families. They show compassion and empathy in their professional practice each and everyday. They are responsible for teaching our earliest learners and deserve to be celebrated. Happy Early Childhood Education Appreciation Day to all our ECEs!
