Every Culinary Backstreets trip is shaped by the people you meet along the way: the home cooks, the market vendors, the winemakers, the fishermen who have been doing this their whole lives. Our 2027 lineup is here, including a brand-new destination: Western Sicily, where those people and their stories are unlike anywhere else we’ve been.

San Sebastián. Bilbao. Barcelona. We've been making our way across the Iberian Peninsula for years, and there was always one stop missing.
Madrid is finally on the map.
We're exploring Chamberí, one of the city's most traditional neighborhoods: century-old taverns, family-run shops, and the kind of vermouth hour that makes you cancel your afternoon plans. The slow approach. The curious palate. The very good glass of something.

Move over Athens! Thessaloniki has been quietly doing its own thing for centuries, and this tour is how you get into it.
Five and a half hours through the city’s historic market district, tracing the layers that built this place: Ottoman street patterns, Sephardic Jewish commercial heritage, refugee foodways from Asia Minor. All of it still alive in the bougatsa shops, olive vendors, and coffee counters people have been gathering at for generations.

Today we stopped by a neighborhood classic on Rıhtım Arkası Sokak in Karaköy. Hüseyin Usta’s traditional çiğ köfte, patiently kneaded every morning, is a fantastic vegan option!

Somewhere between the second coffee and the third hour at the same marble table, you start to understand Buenos Aires. This is a city that invented the art of staying put, and its great cafés have been holding space for that particular pleasure for over a century.
Florida Garden. Oriente. Paulin. Caravelle. Saint Moritz. Five of the best. Writer Gabriela Kogan’s full guide at the link in bio. 🔗

The World Cup is coming to Guadalajara - and if you’re making the trip, the eating is as essential as the football. Tapatíos take their tacos de cabeza more seriously than almost anyone, and Súper Tacos Rafa has been the city’s nighttime standard since 1986. Four housemade salsas, every cut of the head, and a choribubi - chorizo, udder and your choice of head meat - that you won’t forget any time soon.
We’re building out our full Guadalajara guide ahead of the World Cup. Full essentials at the link in bio. 🔗

Since 1967, Kısmet Lokantası has been feeding the traders and workers of Kemeraltı with Aegean home cooking rooted in the nearby district of Urla, long before Urla became the culinary destination it is today. Honest, unhurried, and deeply local.
One of Izmir's essential addresses – and there are many more where that came from. Find the full guide to where to eat and drink in Izmir at the link in bio. 🔗

The recipe for this piripiri chicken traveled to Lisbon from Angola, and at Zubir, they've been doing it justice ever since. One of nearly a dozen stops on our Post-Colonial Feast tour, a full day spent tracing Portugal's history through the kitchens of the people who carried it here.

Grab a spot at your favorite counter along Mexico City’s “taco corridor”, a long street in the eastern part of the city that most people will drive through on their way to or from the airport. The approximately 12-block stretch that runs south of Parque de los Periodistas Ilustres is where you want to go to satisfy your taco cravings.

Our latest newsletter is out, and it's dedicated to the one dish Culinary Backstreets co-founder Ansel Mullins cannot believe hasn't taken the world by storm: Tunisian brik. Savory, fried, photogenic, and deeply satisfying, it's been a fixture on our Marseille tours for years and it is long overdue for its moment.
Our Marseille guide @yeswaymarseille makes the case, and shares five spots in the city where brik is worth going out of your way for:
@chezyassine_officiel : The Tunisian classic. Half-moon shaped, runny yolk, capers, the crispest dough in town. Finish with a squeeze of lemon.
Patisserie Journo: More compact Tunisian brik with thick dough, filled with potato, egg, or tuna. Order the citronnade alongside.
La Femina: Algerian brik: square, enormous, and generous. The bourek annabi is a Ramadan staple.
O' Coin Gourmand: Burrito-size tuna brik, perfect for eating on the run. Pack napkins.
@chateaubeaupin_marseille : Gastronomic dining from Algerian Chef Sidi Sahli — brik elevated without losing its soul.

@gaziburmamustafa was on our list for a long time, and we finally made the trip yesterday. They have a huge menu of Gaziantep sweets, but we went with the baklava and took some burma kadayıf to go. It’s easily one of the best baklavas in Istanbul.

This is what a table in Madrid is supposed to look like. Our new walking tour through Chamberí, one of the city’s most traditional neighborhoods, spends five hours doing justice to it: churros and chocolate, classic tapas, jamón sliced to order, market stalls where the vendors still know their customers by name, and the kind of century-old taverns that made Madrid’s food culture worth knowing in the first place.
This is the real Madrid. Book your spot at the link in bio. 🔗
