In the early fourth century BC, Simias of Rhodes wrote a poem in the shape of an egg. Centuries rolled oon, and poems in the shape of a nightingale egg and a swan egg were scribbled down by Scaliger (1561). Here, a culigram for a 21st-century hen egg. What is a culigram?
Guillaume Apollinaire wrote Calligrammes - poems in the shape of the thing about which he was musing. Punning on calligrammes, culigrams are recipes taking shape. In the spirit of Apollinaire & co, they are experimental and playful. A good part of the joy in cooking is reading recipes. Like stocks and sauces, both culigrams and my cookery cards are recipes reduced to their essence, with a pinch of the poetic (though they remain recipes to the core).
