Kevin Gonzalez was only 18 years old.
He was a U.S. citizen. He was dying of stage 4 colon cancer. And in the final days of his life, his last wish was simple: to see his parents again.
His parents tried to come to the United States to be with their son after learning his condition had become terminal. They applied for emergency visas and were denied. Then, desperate to hold their child one more time, they attempted to cross the border and were detained by ICE in Arizona.
While his parents sat in detention, Kevin recorded videos begging for their release.
Eventually, after public pressure, legal advocacy, and intervention from lawmakers and the Mexican consulate, a judge ordered his parents released and deported to Mexico so they could reunite with him.
They made it to Durango. They held him again. And less than a day later, Kevin died.
No matter where you stand politically, this should break your heart.
No family should have to spend a child’s final days fighting a detention system just to say goodbye. No parent should have to wonder whether the government will let them hold their dying son’s hand one last time.
May Kevin Gonzalez rest in peace. And may we build an immigration system that remembers our humanity before it is too late. 🕊️
