Hey y'all - as part of my Austin Studio Tour installation at 6000 Gateshead drive i will be collecting undamaged packaged food for a @ctxfoodbank associated pantry. The New Colossus Revisited by @theangrycloud and @amirocks73 , another production of the #centraltexasutilitybeautificationproject @ctxubp . Felt like we all needed to be reminded that people coming to this country, fleeing persecution and violence or simply looking for a better life are core to what makes this country strong, bringing new ideas, perspectives and resourcefulness. It is the promise of America, at its best, fulfilled. The rule of law should be used to protect freedoms and support a more just society, not as a weapon wielded against vulnerable people to spread fear for political gain.
This box is dedicated to the memory of my late father-in-law, Zvi, who fled Poland and the Nazis as a child, went from displaced person’s camp to displaced person’s camp, lived in a variety of countries before coming to the US to study, settling in Massachusetts where he built a life and family.

Thanks to @raasininthesun for reposting this piece I created a few years ago with @amirocks73 of @gonzoviz at her organization's Bolm Rd. Community walls project in Govalle. Through the piece I aimed to inform the flood of new residents and visitors to the quickly gentrifying neighborhood, full of art spaces and hip donut shops,about the 1928 Austin City Plan, which was adopted by the city council and implemented to actively segregate Austin and move the city’s black population to a specific area of East Austin, an area then further cut off from the rest of the city by i35 in the early 60s.
Through this piece I was not looking to shame or attack people today, but to make sure folks understand history so we can learn these lessons, understand how we got to where we are now, and craft better policy approached with more thoughtful attitudes, to not repeat this history and build a more just society.
This is part of what are kids should be learning about in school and unfortunately it is the kind of thing our state and federal government seem to be trying to prevent with their seemingly intentionally destructive policies towards public education and their attempts to label inconvenient historical facts as extremist indoctrination.
Read about this dark chapter in our city’s history and with the legislature in session, reach out to your member and make sure they are supporting public education, the free exchange of ideas and a well rounded teaching of history.

Some thoughts from passerbyers while we were painting the John Lewis VOTE! box. A big part of what we do is to create something positive for our community, so we were so glad to hear these supportive and often very insightful thoughts.
And today is the last day to register to vote in Texas! Lookup your local voters registration office and go register or fill out and print the form from votetexas.gov and take it to the post office so it gets postmarked today! (Go to an agent dont just drop it in the box). Remember, we are all in this together!

Painting with @amirocks73 for the @ctxubp (Central Texas Utility Beautification Project) creating a #VOTE box inspired by #JohnLewis , placed intentuinally to encourage the tens of thousands who will descend on Zilker Park for the Austin City Limits music festival over the next few weeks to get out and Vote.
The deadline for registering in Texas is October 7, go to VoteTexas.gov to find out how to register (don't dawdle) - there are also voters registration volunteers all over Austin who make it easy. You can check your status online (which is a good idea as many people have been scrubbed recently). Outside of Texas go to Vote.org for more.
