I love stop-motion, specifically printmaking and stop motion. It brings me so much joy to make something in the most antiquated way possible to maximize error, bringing back life and texture into something that could have been simple. This is just a sketch of piece I am developing but wanted to share.

Last fall I slaughtered a goat to feed myself and my community. I picked her up from the farm, fed her, held her, named her, sang to her in her last moments, slaughtered her, dragged her to the hanger, skinned it, gutted it, and set the meat to rest, only to realize I started saying “it” instead of “her”. I made haggis with the organs, built a fire, attached the meat to a wooden cross, ground spices, prepared an Argentine asado roast, basted it every thirty minutes for five hours, and threw a party. I was left with a feeling of overwhelming connection and belonging. I was devoured by guilt and uncertainty.

What we consume has become a moral issue. Eating meat has become as polarizing as who you vote for, though few still slaughter their food. “Those With Brown Eyes” is a feature-length documentary capturing my pursuit of understanding death in meat consumption. I take us to the homes of Indigenous hunters, small-scale slaughterhouse owners, butchers by day and mothers by night, and even to the head butcher of a Michelin-star farm-to-table restaurant. Nestled in the lush and ancient landscape of the Catskills, I explore the perspectives of those who slaughter, to understand their experiences, unearth their philosophies, and engage with the traditions that drive them.
