Fly Fishing for Trophy Striped Bass - John Field will give a talk about exploring northern waters.
John will give a current look at striper habits, timing, location, techniques, flies and tackle, to pursue big stripers in Maine and Canada. He’ll share info on top guides, innovative flies, and answers from marine biologists on striper behavior, the effects of climate change, and much more.”
Bio: John Field is an FFI Master Casting Instructor, photographer, writer, and angling host. To date, he has written three books, Fly-Casting Finesse (2015), ACA’s Beginner’s Guide to Fly Casting (2018), and Fly Fishing for Trophy Striped Bass (2024). John’s articles have been published in Tail Fly Fishing, MidCurrent, Fly Fisherman Magazine, Canadian Sportfishing Magazine, and more. He was a co-producer and cameraman for Larry Dahlberg Productions for Larry’s show, Hunt for Big Fish, on ESPN. John served as president of the American Casting Association and president of the New York Chapter of Trout Unlimited. The speaker for the Connecticut Surfcasters Association’s April 1st meeting will be Frank Gonsalves, representative for Century Rods, Van Staal Reels, Simms products and renowned surf fisherman here in the Northeast. His topic of the evening will be “Throw it All”. He’ll elaborate on when to best utilize live bait, wood and plastic. Bring your notebooks, Frank will load you up with the info you’ll need to load up on big striped bass this season.
The meeting will start promptly at 7:00pm on Wednesday, April 1st at the Madison Memorial Town Hall at 8 Meeting House Lane, Madison Connecticut. We will have a short business meeting and a raffle of surfcasting gear before Frank’s presentation. #stripedbass #surfcasting
Join us at the Madison Memorial Town Hall, 14 Meetinghouse Lane, Madison on March 4th at 7pm. The March meeting program will be “The Mysteries of River Herring,” presented by CSA member and DEEP Marine Biologist, Kevin Job. Alewives and blueback herring have both been making a stronger presence in Connecticut waters for the past several years. River herring are still protected from being harvested by anglers. However, stripers will fall for artificials when they are pursuing herring. They’re one of the baitfish to follow if you’re looking to start off the season with some larger bass.
However, most of us are still trying to figure the where, when and why herring show up. Kevin’s background as surfcaster and career as a fisheries manager make him the “Herring Maven,” in my opinion.

February’s CT Surfcasters Association meeting will be held at the ZeeBass Factory/Store at 60 Watson Boulevard in Stratford on Wednesday, February 4th at 7:00pm.
Ethan Pernek will demonstrate how to care for and maintain surf reels to keep them working flawlessly in harsh environments . Gary DuFresne will talk about tides and fishing the Cape Cod Canal. We’re also scheduled to have Glenn from GW customs (rod builder), in the shop with some new one pieces, as well as Elliot from 24/7, Mike from Zinger Baits and possibly a few others.
As always, this meeting is open and free of charge to the general public.
I love visiting that shop. It’s part reel factory and retail shop and part northeast fishing museum, and 100% great place to talk fishing with Ron and Ethan while shopping or having your reel serviced. They put out the best reel on the market in my opinion, and American-made, and provide the best service out there.

Joe Cassone and Kevin Job (CSA member and Anadromous Fisheries Biologist at CT DEEP Marine Fisheries Division) will be the guest speakers at the Connecticut Surfcasters Association’s January meeting on Wednesday, January 7th. They will be speaking about the recent scarcity of menhaden (bunker) in Long Island Sound, the reliance of striped bass on other alternative forage and how to accommodate for that with changes in our lures and tactics in fishing for striped bass in those conditions. In addition to our short business meeting, we will have our usual raffle of fishing lures and equipment. The meetings, including presentation and raffle, as always, will be open and free of charge to non-members from the general public.
