The CSCU Libraries EDI & SJ Team hosted its Spring Program on May 1, 2026, at CT State Capital. This year’s theme, The Courage to Create Change: Social Activism in America, brought together participants from across CSCU and the CT State Library for a timely and thought-provoking exploration of activism in the United States.
The program featured a dynamic keynote address by Dianna Crawford, Director of the Melton McAvay Center for Equity and Social Justice at CT State Gateway. Attendees also engaged in a panel discussion with panelists Chakeya Chapman, Kenneth Herniman, Amina Musa, and moderator, Payton D. Cooke. There also was a collaborative brainstorming session facilitated by Chakeya Chapman, and the event concluded with a wonderful presentation from Kari Swanson, M.B.A., M.L.S., the current President of the SCSU-AAUP chapter of CSU-AAUP, the CSU faculty union.
Throughout the event, participants examined the current landscape of social activism, discussed the changes needed to advance equity and justice, and explored both collective and individual actions that can help drive meaningful change.

Gateway to the Skies takes the podium.
Gateway’s Drone Team, Gateway to the Skies, competed in the NASA Community College Drone Challenge and finished third overall out of nine campuses—earning a spot on the podium against teams with years of experience.
The team also earned first place in the Poster and Presentation category and tied for first in Multi‑Pilot Flight, showcasing both technical skill and thoughtful communication.
They call it a true community win, made possible through support and encouragement from across the Gateway campus, along with tremendous guidance from colleagues at CT State and the Connecticut Space Grant Consortium.
As Club Advisor Jonathan Braverman shared, “I couldn’t be prouder of our students and their initiative. It was a thrill to watch them—and I’m excited to see what comes next.”
Gateway to the Skies is just getting off the ground.
In honor of National Library Week, we’re celebrating the incredible impact of our campus libraries across the state. CT State libraries support student success by providing research assistance, access to academic databases, technology loans like laptops and hotspots, study spaces, and a wide range of physical and digital resources. Our libraries also welcome the broader community, offering access to local archives, newspapers, and quiet spaces for reading or professional study.
