Next week the CT Department of Agriculture, with the assistance of the FDA, will be conducting a hydrographic dye dilution study of the Norwalk Water Pollution Control Authority. Beginning Tuesday 5/19, residents may notice a red discoloration in Norwalk Harbor and the waters of Long Island Sound. The study aims to ensure that Norwalk shellfish are not impacted by the WPCA in support of Norwalk’s historic & robust shellfish industry. #ctgrown #norwalkct #longislandsound #oysters #clams

Dozens of dairy farmers along with industry partners, legislators, and state officials gathered at @mapleleaf_farm_llc in Hebron yesterday where @govnedlamont announced plans to release $22.5 million from Connecticut’s Federal Cuts Response Fund to provide immediate relief to the state’s dairy farmers. Dairy is the state’s second largest agricultural sector providing jobs and economic activity in rural communities and a steady supply of fresh, nutritious milk and dairy products to residents. 🥛🐄 #ctgrown #ctdairy

✨International Year of the Woman Farmer Spotlight✨ Megan Mordasky at Westview Farm in Woodstock, CT Megan Mordasky has been farming for 9 years at Westview Farm, a family operation producing grass-finished beef, fresh produce, locally grown flowers, quality hay, and handcrafted goods. They help customers reconnect with their food and the land it comes from with a focus on regenerative practices for a healthier future. 🥩What inspired you to become a farmer? Growing up on my grandparent’s farm and being involved in the operation gave me the opportunity to fall in love with the lifestyle and raising cattle. However, it was a high school environmental science class that taught me that my actions as a farmer could have a positive effect on the environment around me, all while producing food and continuing my family’s farming legacy. 🥩What advice would you give to other women? Farming is one of the most challenging, but also most rewarding careers out there. While starting out or learning new skills can seem intimidating, sometimes more so a woman, don’t be fooled. Agriculture needs women. The skill set women bring to the industry, especially to animal agriculture, is vital to the overall success and growth of the agricultural sector. 🥩Describe a challenge you face as a woman farmer: Women are often made to feel like they can’t do “hard” things, manage heavy equipment, or work with large animals and unfortunately this rhetoric can cause a lot of fear to build around these tasks. Overcoming the intimidation factor, or simply doing it scared, was something and is something I am still working on. At the end of the day as long as you are working smart and safely, it doesn’t matter your size or gender, you can do those “hard” things too. 👉 Follow Megan at @westview.farm.ct to learn more! #CTGrown #WomenInAg #DiversifiedFarming #LiveConnecticut

✨International Year of the Woman Farmer Spotlight✨ Brittany Conover, Shaggy Coos Farm & Creamery, LLC in Easton Brittany Conover has been operated Shaggy Coos Farm & Creamery, a first generation, woman-run dairy operation for 10 years. They milk and process all of their dairy products, including butter and gelato. In addition to the cows, they raise pork, chickens, and turkeys. Farm products are sold through an honor system farm store, as well as wholesale partners across Fairfield County. Most recently they started a home delivery service. 🥛What inspired you to become a farmer? I became a farmer because I love working with the land and animals in a way that’s meaningful and visible every day. Farming lets me connect people to their food, solve problems creatively, and see the direct impact of hard work. I want to build a legacy for my children and the next generation. 🥛What advice would you give to other women? Trust that you belong here. Agriculture needs your voice, your ideas, your compassion, and your strength. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, take up space, or challenge “the way it’s always been done.” Find mentors and be one when it’s your turn. Lean on other women in the field; the friendships you build will carry you through the hard days. 🥛Describe a challenge you face as a woman farmer: One challenge was balancing farm responsibilities while expanding our operation. I overcame it by creating clearer systems, better record keeping, setting priorities, and using technology to track health, production, and schedules. Breaking big goals into manageable steps helped me grow without losing control of day-to-day tasks. I also learned that it is ok to hire help. I hired a female manager who has been my best investment for the growth of the farm. 👉 Follow Brittany at @shaggycoosfarm to learn more! #CTGrown #CTDairy #WomenInAg #DiversifiedFarming #FarmingwithKids
