Taken three days after the artist was conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF), these are the first-ever images of Connor Dolan alongside two other embryos. Which is which remains unclear.

pH-reactive painting on silk… part of a new triptych [progress pic]
Alizarin crimson, eosin Y, lye, and hydrochloric acid on silk.
Alizarin crimson (i.e. madder root) has been used for thousands of years to dye textiles and make paint. In recent decades, it’s also been shown to inhibit enzymes involved in viral replication, including HIV. The same chelation chemistry that binds it to the silk in this piece potentially underlies its viral interference.
eosin Y was first developed as a textile dye, then used for staining biological tissue. Both pigments are sensitive to pH changes.
lye and hydrochloric acid neutralize each other, leaving only saltwater behind. Pink areas are lye-dominant, orange areas acidic. And the whole thing is completely reversible.
