This summer I am a research fellow at the Institute for Public Architecture working on a project exploring the ways art and design can help influence adoption of renewable energy sources in public space. My project is focused on developing small scale wind turbines that demonstrate power generation capacity as well as modeling potential site integration for these turbines.
Much of the conversation about adopting wind technology is clouded by the complexity of large offshore wind farms. Smaller turbines can be installed in more locations with less environmental disruption and even the potential of providing publicly accessible power in parks, public gardens or shared public spaces.
I set about building a turbine as a means of understanding the complexity of the electrical system as well as the issues surrounding public use and adoption of renewable energy.
Over the next month I will add more process images and video as I move towards a high functioning prototype for future site specific application.
