For years, our industry has debated training.
We talk about what apprentices should learn, how long it should take, and what good mentorship looks like. But most of those conversations are based on personal experience and opinion. We don’t have much real data about how studios across the industry are actually training people.
That’s what this research project is trying to change.

This survey was designed and conducted by @crystalsims — co-founder of Evolution Body Piercing in Albuquerque, certified life coach, and longtime industry educator.
This research is part of her ongoing work to help piercing studios build stronger training systems, develop their people, and run businesses that are easier to manage — without burning everything (and everyone) out in the process.
Stress is part of the job, but staying dysregulated doesn’t have to be. In Regulate and Recharge: Nervous System Care for Burnout Prevention, @crystalsims will introduce you to practical ways to support nervous system resilience so that you can create calmer experiences for yourself, your team, and your clients.

You’ll learn a variety of tools like breathwork, safety sequences, and stretch-based movement that can be used in the studio to help regulate in real time. In an industry that asks so much of us, nervous system care isn’t a luxury—it’s how we keep showing up without burning out.

Meet Crystal, co-owner and founder of Evolution Body Piercing—an industry powerhouse who’s been breaking barriers and building up her community for over 30 years.
But being a woman in this industry hasn’t always been easy. Crystal had to unlearn the pressure to “fix” everything for everyone and instead stand firm in her values—even when it meant letting people be upset. Her advice is this ➡️ Find Your People. There’s a whole community of women ready to support you, and the ones who judge? They’re just not your people.
Crystal’s journey started in the early ‘90s when she walked into her first professional piercing studio—expecting a sketchy basement and instead discovering a world of precision, care, and professionalism. That moment sparked a lifelong passion, leading her to create a studio where artists are paid fairly, given work-life balance, and supported in their growth. 🌱

Celebrating my 1 year of sobriety with anxiety was not how I expected the day to go but that’s exactly how this journey has been. Tough at times, Humblingly real, unexpected and it’s taken courage for me to show up for myself even when I haven’t felt worthy. But it’s also been beautiful and transformative and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
