Alright, so we recorded this album back in 2024, I had sent @crutchofmemory demos that I recorded in 2023 while staying in a tiny home in the backyard of some bluegrass musicians in Columbia, Missouri. The songs on this album were all written from summer of 2022 to about January of 2024 while living in St. Louis. So in that time I’ve moved twice, put some music online, joined and left a couple of bands, crashed out a time or two dozen; been a little more out of sync lately. After six and a half years of living in the Midwest I’m back living in Birmingham. Reflecting back on Vespers, I think these songs capture what I’d been striving for sonically and expressively, really just trying to find peace and ground myself in a turbulent period of time. I’m proud of this album, grateful for all of the support from CoM, my peers, my family, the universe, and all of the people I’ve collaborated with in this process. I am in awe of so many of yall. The record comes out officially on June 5th, then I’m going on tour from June 6th to June 21st. I’m so damn excited to hit the road and kick it. I’ll be posting more next week with more info on that. Link in bio to preorder the record and listen to a track on the album called “Blues for Herb” inspired by my old banjo teacher.

@itsallyoucowboy 's 16 song opus of gleeful cynicism, "I CAN'T EAT" is bulging with such excessive earwormism that it could be difficult to imagine outtakes living among the intakes. Your imagination isn't fooling you- The physical cassette version has SIX additional tracks that don't live on the internet ANYWHERE. And they're all killer, no filler: - Erase My Mind - I Will Try (Not To Die) - What's On Your Chest - Get Your Hands Off My Friend - I Wonder Why I Always Wonder Why - I Feel It All Over We've got a small box-worth of these tape sets still living on our shelves, get your copy before *POOF* they're gone!! 📸: @billyhintzz 🎨: @amospitsch

A few days ago, @crutchofmemory dropped an album that's been in the works for a long time. @itsallyoucowboy 's 'I Can't Eat'. In late 2020, Frankie got in touch with me to put together some artwork for a project of his that I hadn't heard of. He and I didn't know each other well; I knew him from the Madison power violence/grind band The Central. He sent me a folder of rough mixes for this new album to take a listen to. I took a quick listen and said 'I'd love to'. When I work on album art for people, I typically give the album a listen or two and put it down. Then I get down to work with something completely unrelated playing. Something that'll fill the air but I'm also not distracted by. (if there's rhythm, I'm playing drums on my drafting table) This instance was no different. But by the time I started really getting to work on it, it was early spring of 2021 and I found myself throwing it on in the car with the windows down. Again and again and again. I was realizing this music checked most of the boxes of what I'm wanting out of a band. Infectious hooks. Hard hitting and solid rhythm. And it was funny! I started remembering lyrics cuz they made me laugh. In this way, it reminded me of some of my favorite hip hop albums. There was a relatable cynicism. But it was a POP album. Keys-driven in the tradition of Michael McDonald. And there was an urgency that I was totally locked into. I listened to it more than anything else that spring. And so as I finished up the art (pic #1), I proposed to Frankie that perhaps the label I run release it. But maybe we mix it at our studio? He was hesitant to let the mix go, and as I kept listening I thought: you know what? It's perfect the way it is. It's got a lot of love in it and you can hear it. Some years passed as it got placed on the back burner repeatedly until last year we really got grinding on putting it out into the world. We shot a music vid w/ our guy @finnbjornerud and shot some photos for the tape shells at @the.photo_opp w/ @emmalieengle (pics #2,4). In my heart I hope enough people hear this to drive demand for a vinyl release. It deserves it. 📸 #2,4: @hotspider 📸 #3: @billyhintzz

Writing succinct captions for Caley Conway is a fool’s errand. From her gripping lyrics imparted via her ethereal voice to her spellbinding guitar riffs and otherworldly, welcoming aura, each show feels bemagicked. What’s more is her bewilderingly humble attitude about it all. We saw her on stage for the first time in 2010. Since then, this prolific artist has played countless shows at local venues, headlined Milwaukee’s most renowned music festivals, celebrated album release parties, and collaborated with highly celebrated groups like @fieldreportmusic . Part 3: @caleyconwaymusic What is your songwriting process? “I usually am working with my acoustic guitar. Sometimes I’ll be messing around on the electric, just finding cool tones. There’s a lot sonically to explore on the electric guitar. So, that’s really fun for coming up with musical ideas. But I feel like when a song comes in its most full form, I’m usually playing my acoustic guitar, and some form of lyrics and music come at the same time. That’s the best-case scenario for writing a song, but it involves a profound suspension of disbelief in order to just allow ideas to come, whether or not you think that they’re good necessarily. Sort of becoming this more open channel. If you’re open to bad or nonsense things coming through, it’s a little bit more likely that something really true will come.” So, get it all out now, curate it later? “Yeah, definitely editing is a huge part of it, and it’s much easier to work with material that’s already there, then edit it, thinking this could shape into something that I like. More often than not, my songwriting process lately has been finding chords, moods, drones, riffs, and progressions on the guitar, and then having a lyrical and melodic concept come a bit later. I’m willing to do the work to coax it out, force it a little bit.” “Partner” was recorded at @silvercitystudios + released via @crutchofmemory Enterprises Stream the album and find out more info HERE: caleyconway.com 💫 Find out more about this extraordinarily talented musician in Parts 1 & 2!

“Sometimes there’s a guilt to sitting down and making music. There’s also a guilt that comes with not.” Part 2: @caleyconwaymusic Caley Conway is a living, breathing embodiment of the words “benevolent” and “creative.” Endlessly talented and perenially prolific, she is a pillar of the Milwaukee music scene. This renowned virtuoso is wholly unpretentious, unendingly kind, and goes out of her way to support other musicians and arts performers in the city. From residencies at prominent music venues and headlining the city’s most highly attended music festivals to consistently releasing new music and nearly always gigging and touring, Caley Conway is a household name in Milwaukee. Her most recent album, “Partner,” was recorded at Silver City Studios. Founded by Josh Evert, this reputable studio provides both a space and top-tier assistance for Milwaukee artists to record, mix, and master audio. What was the difference between you trying to produce things on your own, and then going to a professional studio? “I worked at Silver City, which is a very valuable resource to have. It really clicked for me to work with Josh [Evert] there, because he has such a respect for the fact that I have done a lot of the engineering and a lot of the process myself. He’s totally happy to be a person who fits into the puzzle where needed, rather than somebody who comes in like, ‘I want to be this producer in a sense that really gives it the sonic sheen and makes the recording into what it’s going to be.’ That’s something that I’ve struggled with in my career—trying to figure out who to work with and working with different producers at varying degrees. “There’s something about Josh and Silver City that really aims to be your facilitator and collaborator rather than your babysitter, your quality control. It ended up being a really good working relationship.” Find out more about this extraordinarily talented musician in Parts 1 & 3! “Hours in the Day” from “Partner” recorded at @silvercitystudios + released via @crutchofmemory Enterprises Stream the album and find out more info HERE: caleyconway.com 💫
