Global greenhouse gas emissions are currently tracking the high-emissions path, which could raise global temperatures by 3.0°C to 5.1°C by the end of the century.🌡️
This will put today’s vegetation at risk and change where species can live, with direct implications for biodiversity, timber use, and other ecosystem services.
But where might the world’s major biomes – forests, grasslands, deserts 🌳🌵🌲 – shift as the climate changes?
To find out, we modeled the current global distribution of biome climate envelopes (the climate conditions that support each biome) and projected how they may shift under future climate scenarios.🌍

Since 2000, over half of the world’s forests have become more fragmented. Trees are being cut down at alarming rates, so overall forest cover is steadily declining — but fragmentation tells an even more sobering story. Large, continuous forests are breaking apart into smaller, isolated patches, leaving ecosystems less connected and far more vulnerable. This loss of connectivity threatens ecosystem integrity, accelerates biodiversity loss, and worsens the climate crisis.
The trends are especially severe in the tropics, where fragmentation has accelerated most rapidly. Yet there is also hope: in tropical protected areas, fragmentation was reduced by up to 82%. This shows just how powerful ambitious, well-enforced conservation and restoration can be in safeguarding the integrity of our forests.

🌍🌳 New in Science!
Our latest study shows that since 2000, more than half of the world’s forests have become fragmented.
This isn’t just about trees being cut down — large, continuous forests are breaking apart into smaller, isolated patches. That loss of connectivity threatens ecosystem integrity, accelerates biodiversity loss, and worsens the climate crisis.
But there is hope 💚 In tropical protected areas, fragmentation was reduced by up to 82%. Ambitious and well-enforced conservation is working — and shows what’s possible when protection is prioritized.

Ecosystems worldwide are affected by accelerating anthropogenic pressures. 🌍
This raises one big concern: will our ecosystems be able to withstand these changes? How #resilient are they?
Today, we can capture global resilience patterns using satellite data 🛰️, but there are still large inconsistencies between assessments that emerge from different indicators. To reconcile these perspectives, we reviewed which aspect of resilience each indicator captures and how they relate to each other across the world’s biomes. Our findings underscore the importance of selecting appropriate metrics when scaling assessments across diverse ecosystems 🌳🌵. Why?

We are back from our ummm...."winter hibernation"..... just in time to celebrate the #yearofthesnake! We wish our Chinese colleagues a very Happy New Year, and we hope that the year ahead brings us all a bit of courage, wisdom, and kindness.
And while we are making wishes, let's throw in the hope for a united effort to protect biodiversity and a global reduction in our carbon footprints?
That should do it for now.

#NewStudy: Restor community restoring forests, this one’s for you!
Forest restoration has gained much attention over the past years. While many techniques exist, finding the right, cost-effective mix for various settings on the ground remains a challenge. 🌳🌲
In a new study carried out by scientists at ETH Zürich, we identify 7 affordable restoration methods that can help overcome the ecological & economic challenges of restoring forests.

Forecasting global #forest #carbonstorage requires – among many things – a good understanding of how #forest trees age and how long they live, something that is not quite so straightforward as you'd think!
