"You have to know how to swim to be in the Navy. Perhaps that’s stating the obvious. But I couldn’t swim when I joined, and they still let me in. How is that possible, you ask? Fun fact: They teach you at boot camp. The catch is that you can’t leave until you learn. You’re stuck in boot camp purgatory. Yikes! 😳
But somehow this fish out of water managed to swim. By the skin of my teeth, I passed the Navy third-class swim test a few days before my boot camp graduation. I had no idea what I was getting myself into at the time, but by the time I got out of the Navy in September 2012, I had finally figured out how to be in. As we say in the Navy, I found my sea legs. I had donned the uniform of a Navy Lieutenant for 4 years, 4 months, and 12 days, and I was exhausted.
While in the choppy waters of the Navy, I learned a boat-load, or rather, a “ship”-load about perseverance and how to weather stormy seas. I may not have known what I was getting myself into when I joined, but I did know how to swim and stay afloat when I left.
Little did I know that once I got out of the Navy, my life as a military veteran wouldn’t exactly be smooth sailing either. The benefits of being a veteran are well-publicized… the GI Bill for free education, free healthcare at the VA, and of course, Veteran’s Day freebies. But no one tells you that accessing those benefits is more than a notion. For me, getting quality care through the VA has tested my patience and perseverance more than any challenge I ever faced while serving on active duty. By participating in this installment of Storyectomy, I hope to spotlight a different kind of “Hero’s Journey", not the life and death stakes of serving on the battlefield, but rather, the enduring battle veterans face seeking quality of life years after our military service is over."
