“Heritage” is a film about my family, but it’s also
a film about millions of families. The descendants of Confederate soldiers are virtually uncountable. Tens of thousands of people worked at the Japanese internment camps during World War II. And millions of Americans were lavish beneficiaries of the Jim Crow system - on the backs of millions of others who suffered from it.
“Heritage” is the story of my family’s history, subsequent choices, and historical blind spots, continuing to the present day in a world that
discourages this line of questioning. Maybe it has resonance with your family history as well.

It was an honor and a privilege to be able to make art with Doug Sakmann for some twenty years. From the first school bus run out west on the Warped Tour, through some exceptionally filthy years, to him more recently driving the bus with my own crew all around the south for a documentary, Doug was a constant and formative presence in my art-life. A genuinely unique creative soul has left us decades too soon. There will never be anyone like him, and I will miss him for as long as I live. Doug, thank you for everything.
