INVITE | In London, all the museums in Central seem to get all the attention…
That’s why it’s SO cool to be able to go to places like this that show you another side to London you might not have even heard about.
This is Crossness pumping station.
(And you may recognise it if you’ve been watching this season of The Apprentice!)
It was first built in 1865 to do help with London’s water sanitation problem, and today remains open as a museum dedicated to the history of London’s sewage system—and it’s more fascinating than you’d think!
While you’re here, you can walk around the ornate “cathedral” where the pumping engines are housed, and learn more about the building’s interesting history.
And every month, the museum even holds a “Steaming Day” where you can see the machines in action!
The Crossness Engines Trust itself was originally set up in 1987 to restore the engines, and a large part of the work is done by an unpaid volunteer workforce.
And despite nearly closing down in 2021, they were able to bounce back and keep this fantastic, historic building alive.
Today, it remains as an outstanding example of Victorian Engineering, and—thanks to all the hard work done by its volunteer force and support network—can be preserved for future generations.

#OTD we’re celebrating the anniversary of Sir Joseph Bazalgette's birth. Born 28th March 1819, he was Chief Engineer to the London Metropolitan Board of Works. He designed and built the sewerage network that revolutionised London’s sanitation .
