At the tail end of September 2024, a man in a clown mask broke into the cabins of vacationing women on Walloon Lake in Northern Michigan to rub their feet in the dead of night. And then, the murders began. A Realtor, and then another one. A billionaire human resources officer turned obnoxious podcaster. And then a real estate developer. One after another, someone was murdering the most powerful people in Petoskey and Walloon. Until the night of Sept. 29, 2024, when the so-called Michigan Nighstalker chose the worst possible target. Because it put them on a collision course with Deputy Alexandra Swanson, who ended this murder spree and unmasked the killer behind everything. This is part 25, the final episode, of the 8th season of Crime Adjacent: the untold story of the Michigan Nightstalker. Available now on podcasts everywhere. #audiofiction

Big news in Crime Adjacentland. Coming Wednesday May 20 on podcasts everywhere, we are releasing our live show from Austin and our discussion of the most disturbing serial killer case you have never heard of: The Cross Country Killer. From 1987 to 1995, a serial killer murdered 12 business travelers and almost got away with it, leaving behind a trail of heartbreak along the way. Were it not for one teeny tiny, random, off-hand comment that gave everything away, this killer would have escaped capture for sure. The crimes were that perfect. I cannot wait to share this case with you on all podcasts May 20, because you won't believe what happens next ... Season 8 wraps up next week with the chilling case of the Michigan Nighstalker, and then we head straight into a tour of the country to discuss some of our wildest stories from the Crime Adjacent archive. Austin, Portland, Memphis, San Francisco -- we are re-opening the most haunting, enduring mysteries from the grim underbelly of American true crime and challenging you to solve them.. Those with an ear for the smallest clues and a profiler's way of thinking can listen to every Crime Adjacent live show, for free, every Wednesday on your favorite podcast app. You can also follow along at our patreon page. See you Wednesday May 20, with the case of The Cross Country Killer, on podcasts everywhere. #audiodrama #fictionpodcast #likemurdershewrotemeetsdateline

Two things happened on that final night, Sunday September 29, 2024. Sheriff Press, Bill Laboa, and one of the Crime Adjacent computer pros formed a makeshift team to track all of the clowns roaming Walloon: Tim Meeks, Roger Michaels, and a mysterious third one. As they worked together to identify this new killer, Deputy Swanson raced to the Bear River Country Club, hellbent on rescuing the woman who had rescued her so many years ago. This is part 24 of the 8th season of Crime Adjacent: the untold story of the Michigan Nightstalker. Available now on podcasts everywhere. #audiofiction

Early in the morning on May 24, 2010, a fire broke out at a cabin on Walloon Lake. At first, investigators thought it was an ember flying from a backyard fire pit. But then, fire investigators immediately noticed the smell of gasoline throughout the cabin. And they soon discovered the unlikeliest of suspects outside, watching, wide-eyed and mesmerized, as an entire family burned within the fully engulfed house. It turns out, this pivotal event, so many years ago, would play a role in the downfall of the Michigan Nighstalker. Because it turned out that this killer messed with an absolute survivor and would end up paying the price. The FBI reports that more than 7,000 cases of sextortion happen every year, when blackmailers start up fake relationships with minors to get incriminating materials they can then use to blackmail those minors. Deputy Swanson, who had worked with the FBI, recognized the signs of it playing out here, in Petoskey in 2024, and she immediately rushed into action. Her actions would, in the end, not only stop a horrible sextortionist. But she would finally capture the Michigan Nightstalker. Amidst the backdrop of murder and clown creepings that were happening in Petoskey in 2024, someone was also blackmailing everyday citizens. Do this, or else. Steal this, or else. Send nudes, or else. No one knew it at the time, but this blackmailer would ultimately lead to the capture of the Michigan Nightstalker. Check out episode 21 on podcasts everywhere. #audiobook #thriller #podcastaddict

Sheriff Press had a grand theory about the ultimate suspect in this case. She put it all together when she noticed a pattern. All of the women who were assaulted were out-of-town visitors. But all of the women who were murdered had something in common. They were Realtors. And there was only one man in town with a grudge against Realtors. Was he behind all this? The only problem was ... this guy had been murdered as well. This is part 20 of the 8th season of Crime Adjacent: the untold story of the Michigan Nightstalker. Northern Michigan lake country hadn’t seen a murder in years. But now, there have been four in the span of two days. And Sheriff Press was no closer to stopping them. Because her only suspects were either dead or in jail. But someone was still out there, hunting the next victim. Episode 19 is available now on podcasts everywhere. #audiodrama

Tim Meeks had an accomplice. That’s what he told sheriff Press. Someone paid him to break into cabins. It was this other guy — he was behind all the murders. Not Meeks. But the thing is, when Press went to speak with this alleged accomplice, she discovered something that would alter this entire case and put her further and further away from solving it.
