North York Mid-Century Bungalow ⌂ North York
This North York mid-century house was modernized to fit the contemporary lifestyle of the 21st century family. With sleek lines, natural light, and white oak accents the interior was reconfigured to connect the home though a number of established vistas. Creating a sense of openness within the original home’s divided interior was top on our client's wish list, whilst connection the kitchen, living and dining room to each other and to the exterior was defined as a top priority.
Another important design challenge to overcome was the creation of a modern primary suite and children’s rooms to replace the original configuration of bedrooms on the cramped upper split level. Increasing the height of the basement and lowering the grade at the front of the house permitted a significant increase to the size of the home’s front windows, flooding the new bedrooms with an abundance of natural light, and permitting the primary bedroom and the ensuite to be moved into the half basement. The relocation of the primary suite creates two distinct zones of privacy for both parents, as well as the children who occupy the existing bedrooms on the upper level. The 3rd bedroom was converted into an open playroom, which double as an office, connecting the two bedrooms and acting as a flexible space to meet the family changing needs.
The exterior was updated with thermally modified ash siding, new aluminum clad wood windows, and carefully preserved brick creating a unique street presence, while paying homage to the building’s mid-centry modern roots.
