Founded in 1999 in NYC by Michelle Materre, Creatively Speaking presents film programs and events that address the issues and questions of race, power, and social justice while giving voice to under-served communities that have not always had their concerns heard. "We're continuing the work of Michelle Materre of empowering communities and changing the cultural narrative one film at a time," said Savanna Washington, Creative Program Director. "We want to move the needle on change, especially in the area of public policy." Creatively Speaking is now part of the Institute on Race, Power & Political Economy at The New School. Their programming has included a film series on Haiti (Dreams Deferred But Not Forgotten), the American Indian Land Back Movement (with the American Indian Film Institute), and North Korea (with J.T. Takagi from Third World Newsreel). In 2025 Creatively Speaking partnered with the DOC NYC Film Festival to present a free public screening of short films at The New School, hosted their 2nd Annual Harlem Earth Day, and in April of 2026 will be hosting a free symposium on "Artists & Activism in These Times: The Healing We Need."
