Preparing to call in the spirit guide I know as “The Navigator”—to be embodied by Afro-Indigenous dancer, choreographer, and performance artist Amber Julian @create.elevate —into Suga’. Get tix at suga26.eventbrite.com - link in bio! I have always felt the presence of The Navigator. A gentle push in the direction that’s meant for me. A voice speaking truth into me, so that I may recognize it. The Navigator carries the collective wisdom of my ancestors and serves as a bridge to the spirit plane. In Suga’, I call on the Navigator as I trace my journey toward truths found at the intersections of Blackness, queerness, and gender. The body of The Navigator is made of over 2500 individually attached braids. The labor of family and friends lovingly contributed to bring this form to life—itself a ritual of love, connection and community. The braids themselves invoking the archive of stories, lived experiences and multi-layered meanings held in Blackness centering braiding traditions both ancestral and contemporary. Suga’ opens May 29th East Side Arts Alliance 2277 International Blvd. Oakland Featuring: Co-creator/co-writer/director: Dazié Grego @daziegrego Movement/choreography + performance: Savannah Schmidt @tta_healing_studio Performance: Amber Julian @create.elevate TICKETS: suga26.eventbrite.com (link in bio!) $35 general admission, $15 discount admission Discount admission offered for increased accessibility. All tickets offer the same experience. No one turned away for lack of funds at the door. Seating first come first serve.
