Some artists define a generation quietly. Cathrine Raben Davidsen is one of them - and we’re proud to welcome her back for the second edition of Materia.
For nearly three decades, the Copenhagen-based multi-disciplinary artist, has built one of the most quietly commanding practices in contemporary art - spanning painting, ceramics, printmaking, textiles, and object work, all threaded through by a single obsession: transformation. How images carry meaning. How matter holds myth.
Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Denmark, Trapholt, Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg. It has been collected by Bruce Springsteen, Liv Tyler, and Sofia Coppola. In 2022 she became the first-ever recipient of the Beckett Prize.
For Materia 2026, she brings all of it - the ritual, the material sensitivity, the mythology - into direct conversation with contemporary collectibility.

Prima Materia represents the formless, primeval substance from which everything in the universe originates. In alchemical terms, it’s the essence that exists before form is created — both the beginning and the end of all things. Often symbolized by the Ouroboros, this series explores transformation, the cyclical nature of existence, and the purest essence of matter.
