THIS WEEKEND, you guys. Come swing by @comic_con_oakland and grab THIS INK RUNS COLD and other books from the Morse catalogue, or bug me for a commission on the spot. I’ll likely be doing black and white drawings, no paint this time out, but we’ll hook you up with something special. See you there! Artist Alley F12
This week on the Story First Podcast, we’re joined by artist and storyteller Scott Morse.
Morse is a graphic novelist and animator known for books like Soulwind and Magic Pickle, along with a long career in animation. Early on, he had the opportunity to work under legendary designer Maurice Noble and animator/director Chuck Jones.
Brian first met Scott in 2006 while teaching story at Pixar, and the two have stayed connected through a shared commitment to craft.
In this conversation, they discuss Morse’s path as an artist, the discipline required to sustain a creative life, and the principles that guide his work across mediums.

21. His gold mends the cracks of this world. His eyes still see wonder. His heart still has room. His mind still asks why. And all together, he makes rooms brighter when he enters and leaves marks you’ll never want to erase. @finnnickiest , I hope today is delicious and exciting and calming and worthy of you. I love you, dude.
Saddened to learn of the passing of the great Gary Kelley— @garykelleyart —a huge inspiration for me, and though I never got to meet him, I hear he was a good guy. We own two of his pieces—this one, called “The Three Mikes” (this scan, presumably from Entertainment Weekly, where I believe it appeared and that I found on Google) and a CALIGARI piece that is hard to photograph and I can find no searchable image of. His shapes, textures, compositions, and mood are always lingering in the back of my artist brain. Warm thoughts to his family, friends, and fans. #garykelley
THE MURDER OF MAKE-BELIEVE on the painting table…a space that no longer exists, except in the heart and mind, is still a space that holds power. Theater stages are transient, yet permanent.
This book is largely actual media, with a fair bit of digital finishes. It’s a strange mix, but somehow appropriate for this story about worlds mixing.
