The spring greenery is looking glorious across campus. A reminder to take a break and look up as the sunshine makes an appearance. Hereâs a look at what weâve been up to this April:
âď¸ We welcomed students from Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire for a behind-the-scenes tour of our aviation facilities, alongside the London Luton Airport âReach for the Skyâ competition winners, who arrived in style aboard the National Flying Laboratory Centreâs Saab 340B.
đ We marked 40 years of space education at Cranfield and took a moment to look back at 1996, when Neil Armstrong visited campus to receive an honorary degree. A pretty special milestone in our history.
đ°ď¸ Our alumni really do go above and beyond! Cranfield alumnus and astronaut, Captain Jack Hathaway, captured this incredible shot of campus from the International Space Station. Photoâs sent from space? #OnlyAtCranfield
đ Months of hard work and collaboration culminated with our automotive student groups presenting their group design projects to industry. A key milestone in many of our taught courses.
𤊠With Graduation 2026 just around the corner, our annual recognition certificates are landing with some very deserving students. One of them, Cranfield School of Management alumna, Khushbu Tolani, pictured with her parents was recognised as a valued contributor to the Management MSc programme.
đŞťThe Blast EcoShield, a project led by Cranfieldâs Dr Rachael Hazael CEng, will make its debut at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026.
⨠Weâre proud to be coordinating the multi-year ÂŁ30 million Aviation Non-COâ Research Programme, helping to deepen understanding of aviationâs climate impact beyond carbon emissions.
đ A major ÂŁ20 million initiative is bringing together industry and academia from across the UK, uniting climate scientists, aerospace and aviation experts to tackle some of the sectorâs biggest challenges.
đ And finally, a win for researchers and policymakers alike, LandIS, the UKâs national soil database is now open access, unlocking detailed insights into land across England and Wales.
Small connections make a big difference đ

A classroom like no other âď¸
The Saab340B National Flying Laboratory Centre aircraft landing at @cranfieldairport
Every year, more than 2,000 aeronautical students from over 20 universities, alongside students on specialist Cranfield courses, get the chance to learn on board our Flying Classroom and Laboratory.
With real-time flight data streamed during the flight, students can step into the role of a flight test engineer while theyâre still studying đ

As this yearâs group design project season comes to an end, we asked our automotive students what it was like presenting to industry, and what advice theyâd give to future students.
Across many of our masterâs programmes, group projects place you at the centre of real-world, industry-linked challenges. Working in teams, youâll tackle complex problems, apply what youâve learned in lectures, and think like a professional. At the end youâll present your ideas to a panel of industry experts who put your thinking to the test.

Students from Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire visited Cranfield this week (22 April) to immerse themselves in all things aviation âď¸
Prize winners of @ldnlutonairport âReach for the Skyâ competition took flight from Luton to Cranfield aboard our National Flying Laboratory Centre, a Saab 340B transformed into a flying classroom, where they experienced aerial manoeuvres and explored real-time flight data.
After landing, they joined another 60 students for a tour of our aviation facilities, alongside @theairportguy and got hands-on designing and testing their own wing shapes.
A brilliant day all round, with fantastic enthusiasm from the students throughout đ
âWe look down at Earth and see how interconnected it all is, the thinness of the atmosphere, the movement of weather across the globe. No place exists in isolation; that becomes unmistakably clear from the Cupola window.â
Cranfield alumnus and NASA astronaut Captain Jack Hathaway reflects on the interconnectedness of our world. From the International Space Station, he highlights the global collaboration required for an eight-month mission and shares a unique perspective on humanityâs shared responsibility for our planet.
This Earth Day, weâre reminded that solving the worldâs greatest challenges requires that same collective outlook.
