The second Woodbine Food Pantry screening offers another work by Agnés Varda — the short documentary Black Panthers, a portrait of the party in 1968, following the imprisonment of Huey P. Newton. The Black Panther Party established The People’s Free Food program the following year, in 1969, which provided free breakfast to children, and free groceries throughout the community. J Edgar Hoover wrote: "The [Program] represents the best and most influential activity going for the BPP and, as such, is potentially the greatest threat to efforts by authorities to neutralize the BPP and destroy what it stands for”.
The program continues with Les Blank’s Garlic is as Good as Ten Mothers, a love letter to the stinking rose, playful and joyous in its' celebration of a life force.
Short works by Dagie Brundert punctuate the program, intimate and playful odes to the simple pleasures of life and mysteries of nature.
There is bread, and there are roses, stinking and sweet, shared freely and enthusiastically.
The Woodbine Food Pantry distributes fresh produce, staple dry goods, and bread, twice a week, every Monday and Wednesday morning, for free. Donations and new volunteers are always welcome.

help support your friendly neighborhood food pantry through a surprise cash shortage !
the city drained our funding without warning in order to reallocate it to “higher priority organizations.” Woodbine’s volunteers are seeking donations in order to cover our out-of-pocket purchases of bulk dried and canned goods: beans, rice, fruits, veggies, and other staples that we distribute alongside fresh produce and bread, twice a week (every monday and wednesday morning !)
come hang, watch one of my favorite movies, and toss some $ in the jar if you can
