Last night, our team had the pleasure of participating in the Visual Effects Society @vfx_society (VES) New York Section event, “An Evening with Crafty Apes: Inside the Apocalypse – How ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Was Made.”
Sr. VFX Supervisor Alex Dreiblatt and Sr. VFX Producer Sarah McCulley led an in-depth look at the visual effects work that brought a post-apocalyptic New York City to life — from large-scale environment builds and digital set extensions to the nuanced compositing that grounded each scene in realism. They also shared insights into our pipeline and the collaboration required to deliver high-end episodic VFX at scale.

From the large-scale digital recreation of iconic locations - including a haunting reimagining of Radio City Music Hall - to complex environment builds, extensions, and invisible VFX, the team will walk through the creative challenges and post execution behind the work.
They’ll explore Dead City in depth, along with highlights from other recent projects, through detailed shot breakdowns and a discussion on collaboration and visual storytelling within high-volume episodic and feature post workflows.

Meet Alex Knudsen, VFX Supervisor on our Los Angeles team. Originally from Minneapolis, Alex’s path into film started unexpectedly, watching ‘The Shining’ at a drive-in when he was just five years old.
By thirteen, he was already writing, directing, editing and acting in his own films, setting the foundation for a lifelong career in storytelling. After studying acting at University of Southern California and Shakespeare & Co., Alex began his journey in post-production — while simultaneously launching his own production company and creating independent films and music videos.
That dual perspective behind the camera and in post led to a deep passion for visual effects, evolving from VFX Producer to Supervisor, where he’s helped bring to life some of the industry’s most iconic projects, including ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘The Revenant’ and ‘The Flash’, as well as acclaimed series like, ‘True Detective’ and ‘What We Do in the Shadows.’
From early curiosity to industry-leading work, Alex Knudsen’s journey is rooted in creativity, dedication and a true love for the craft. Get to know him a little better on our latest Sup De Jour highlight!
