After 36 years of dedication, creativity, and leadership, our beloved Melanie Egan has retired as Director of Craft & Design at Harbourfront Centre. From shaping the careers of countless artists to championing craft and design in Canada and beyond, Melanie’s impact is immeasurable.
We will miss her daily presence, but her lessons live on through a phenomenal amount of people she guided and mentored throughout her career. It has been our absolute pleasure and privilege to have been the lucky ones to work alongside her.
It is with much distress that we are posting this news from Toronto.
George Brown College (GBC) is the largest jewellery and gemmology school in North America with 250 full-time students. Closing these programs will have huge repercussions for the future learning of our craft and the jewellery industry in Canada. The implications of this decision cannot be understated, this will be catastrophic to the industry if action is not taken.
We respectfully urge all my Canadian, American, European and UK colleagues, jewellers and artists alike to consider sending a letter of support. Your voice can really help!

Did you know our Artists-in-Residence have extended hour access to our Craft & Design studios?
Our Craft & Design program is the only one available in Canada that offers an emerging artist residency in contemporary craft and design, with a strong focus on professional development. Being able to access the studios and equipment on flexible hours enables our artists to hone their craft uninterrupted and create the work they are passionate about as part of that.
Thank you to the Ontario Trillium Foundation (@ontrillium ) who has helped make this even easier with their grant for our access project, providing flexibility, convenience and better security in accessing our building and studios at all hours of the day.
We had a very interesting meetup at Harbourfront Toronto today. I sketched the glass artist at Craft &Design Studio. @craftdesignto #harbourfront #harbourfronttoronto #harbourfrontcentre #craftdesign @harbourfrontcentre@usktoronto #usktoronto
