It’s a tragic thing to lose a friend so suddenly and so young.
I first met Jon at the Monday Night Night Rides we used to hold back in Provo. It was a great crew, and Jon was among the nicest, most caring, most giving people I’d ever met. We spent a lot of Monday evenings riding around, talking bikes, loving bikes. Other days we’d spend hours at the shop making gems out of trash.
In 2016 he talked me into signing up for Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships saying, “yeah, it’s a race. But mostly it’s a party. You’ll love it.”
He opened up his family’s home to a bunch of dirtbag bike punks, showed us a great time around Portland, and stayed a constant 10-50 feet in front of me as we schlepped our way through six inches of muck over what felt like 10 miles. I never really caught up to him, but I stopped for a lot of hand-up party favors. At least that’s what I tell people anyways. We finished our lap tired and filthy, but all smiles. I’ll never forget it.
I’m grateful I could know him, I’m endlessly grateful we had a chance to speak for a few minutes before he passed. The world lost a real one yesterday.
Love you, Jon. I’ll miss you. Hope to keep a few feet of muck between me and you for a little while longer. You finished your lap all too quick. I guess i got no choice but to keep chasing.
For anyone reading: call your friends when you think of them. Plan the trip. Make the time. We’ll all run outta rope someday, make some memories and make it count.

We will be opening for Thou and Slowhole at the Clubhouse on Oct 11 at 7:30, for the SLC stop on their tour. Hope to see you there
Wrapped up 2021 by completing a goal I’ve had for a number of years—to build my own bicycle.
Big thanks to @waltworks for the experience. Learning TIG welding was humbling and will continue to challenge me well into the future. I’ve definitely only scratched the surface.
There is nothing cooler than making things that make you stoked.
