It’s been a great first week in my new studio space @cottonfactoryca . I’ve primarily focused on attempting to drawing with coloured pencil on canvas, seeing how the pigments take to this new base material, as well as coming to understand that I have to change how I layer the colours to get the pigments to stand out and create enough contrast to make this drawing looks three dimensional and not just a ghost of a drawing
So far it seems surprisingly difficult to get the coloured pencils to make overly dark marks without multiple passes, but I’m actually feeling quite pleased that this self portrait has turned out as well as it has so far
I’ve got a bit more work to do on the hair and then I plan to pick out the weave, similar to my last test (image 4) and see how the coloured pencil looks when parts of the fabric are removed
And believe it or not, I did iron this canvas 😬

The Cotton Factory is pleased to announce that Hamilton-based artist Laura Heaney has been selected as the 2026 Artist-in-Residence. Heaney’s residency will run from May 1 through September 30, 2026, culminating in the development and presentation of a new body of work.
A classically trained artist known for her meticulous, hyper-realistic drawings, Heaney brings a rigorous and historically informed practice to her work. Drawing on traditions rooted in Renaissance and Dutch Golden Age aesthetics, her work reinterprets these influences through a contemporary lens, often using accessible materials such as coloured pencil, graphite, and ink. Her work has been exhibited extensively across Southern Ontario, the Canadian Maritimes, Quebec, and New York.
During her residency at The Cotton Factory, Heaney will embark on an ambitious new direction in her practice, integrating her detailed portraiture with sculptural textile elements. This marks a significant evolution in her work, expanding from two-dimensional drawing into material-based exploration.
“I would like to begin a new body of work that combines my love of drawn portraits with more sculptural textile elements,” says Heaney. “The Cotton Factory provides a unique environment that champions textile-based practices, and being surrounded by artists working across disciplines will allow me to experiment, collaborate, and grow in ways that my current studio cannot support.”
Heaney’s residency will unfold in two phases. The first will focus on research, experimentation, and material exploration, allowing her to develop a cohesive conceptual and technical framework. The latter phase will be dedicated to producing a resolved body of work, with plans for a culminating exhibition.#residency #artist #cottonfactoryhamilton
