Happy Christmas from Co-Treetment
The team at Co-Treetment want to thank you all for your support and business this year, 2025.
With your support the mini-forest, on the outskirts of Thringstone, Leicestershire has grown to be 7,250 trees. That's amazing, especially given we are a young business that only began planting in 2020.
Thank you also of course to all the companies and individuals that have come along to help us to plant, we have loved having you with us and to be able to share the beauty of nature, trees and bees are such a fantastic combination.
So as we move towards the end of 2025 and Christmas arrives in 7 days here's to a wonderful festive season for everyone.
Happy Christmas

Update on the Bees | 22nd May 2025 | Post 4 part 2
So here we are now at post 4 part 2, following the ones from 9th March, 4th April, 10th April and 22nd May. Unfortunately life with bees isn't a linear one; hence the variety of dates and times used. But thankfully thanks to the iPhone we can catch these fantastic events on video.
As ever it's all with gratitude to Lisa McKenzie who is keeping the Co-Treetment team updated from her visits to the field in Thringstone, where our apiary resides.
So across the way from where Lisa McKenzie had spotted swarm number 1, there was swarm number 2. A bit smaller this time, but worthy of further investigation.
It's likely to have a Queen, and indeed with the power of zoom, Lisa found her; not only did she find her she was able to identify her as ours, one that had escaped - 21 seconds in and there she is; the Queen. Lisa was able to capture the Queen in a specially designed Queen trap (who knew), which you can view at 50 seconds in the attached video. Popping the Queen into a 3rd nuc meant the bees would follow her into it.
With that in mind, the swarm was moved to our one remaining nuc, the others were at the time being cleaned. It was locally manufactured by a now retired beekeeper and whilst it was a bit shoddy, the nuc was very useful.
And there it is, post 4 part 2, a Queen returned to a nuc with her followers joining her.
As is typical for us, we are once again talking about the beauty of bees, how they are doing, and what the future for our apiary is. We are so excited!
We find it very interesting, and hopefully you will as well.

Update on the Bees | 22nd May 2025 | Post 4
A bit delayed on my posting as life just got busy; but here we are; now at post 4, following the ones from 9th March, 4th April and 10th April. As always it's all with gratitude to Lisa McKenzie who is keeping the Co-Treetment team updated from her visits to the field in Thringstone, where our apiary resides.
In this update we are reporting that weāve had a little bit of a setback. Unfortunately we lost one of the hives earlier in March and then an old Queen about six weeks ago.
Our experts David, The Bee Farmer, McDowell and Lisa McKenzie introduced a new virgin Queen into one of the hives but unfortunately the residents of the hive killed her! On the same day Lisa found a swarm in the mini-forest attached again as they did last year to one of our memorial plaques. They are now in one of the nucs (Nucleus Hives). In fact you can see how Lisa very bravely moves the bees from the plaque into a nuc.
Lisa then splits the hive with the lifts, into the other nuc.
At that time we had two hives with laying Queens, two hives with no Queens (although that will be addressed soon) and two nucs; one definitely with a queen the other set to make a Queen.
So this our fourth post of 2025, we are once again talking about the beauty of bees, how they are doing, and what the future for our apiary is. We are so excited!
We find it very interesting, and hopefully you will as well.

A wonderful day at Co-Treetment's mini-forest | 10th May 2025
Last Saturday Darrell Taylor and Keith Cox visited our site, near Thringstone for some maintenance of the field. It is vital to keep on top of any weeds or foilage that might damage the growth of the trees.
Too many trees are planted and left to fend for themselves, a prime example being to ones we see now almost routinely planted on a new housing estate or by the side of the road as part of the biodiversity planning of local authorities. Look at them a little later on in the year and few, if any have prospered.
We now have 6,500 trees planted at the field, and we wanted to get a snapshot of how they are looking and of course also to check in on the apiary, (5 hives), to see how the bees are doing.
We can report that all the trees are in great condition, whether planted in 2020 or 2025, they all look great. Some as high as 20ft now! Amazing.
Of course we also have a duty of care for the trees towards our fabulous customers, many of whom now have over 100 trees planted. These customers are shown below, and we feel proud to have had their support, their passion for doing the right things and to make a difference to our world:-

Update on the Bees | 30th March 2025
With 6,500 trees in the ground, now absorbing around 162,500 kg of carbon every year back in 2024 we decided it was time to look at ways to expand the benefits of a nature places.
We had a successful year for the 2024-2025 with David, The Bee Farmer, McDowell, and Lisa McKenzie, producing many hundreds of jars of honey which proved to be extremely popular at farmers markets and with our customers.
So as we start 2025, Lisa shared a recording confirming that the Queen is laying, we have four frames of brood (this refers to the eggs, larvae and pupae of the honeybees), the Queen excluder is now in place (means the Queen can't get through but her daughters are able to.
As with all things to do with bees, we found it very interesting, and with every day a school day there's likely something in there for all of our followers to learn. On that basis we are once again sharing a few facts about bees that compliments what we have shared previously about trees; so bees and trees.
+ Bees are insects with 6 legs, 2 pairs of wings, and branched hairs.
+ Only female bees have stingers, which are modified egg-laying organs.
+ Bees are closely related to wasps and ants, and belong to the clade Anthophila.
+ Bees are important pollinators, carrying pollen from flower to flower on their legs and body.
+ Bees can produce honey by following a 10-step process that involves collecting nectar, regurgitating it, and evaporating it.
+ Bees have been around for about 30 million years, and there are 20,000 distinct species of them.
+ Bees are facing threats from habitat loss, pesticides, diseases, and climate change. This is one of the reasons we wanted to provide land and a safe space for the apiary.

Another fantastic day in Co-Treetment's journey | 28th February 2025
Yesterday will go down as one of our best days at Co-Treetment as we were so fortunate to have a collection of wonderful people joining us at our field to help in planting a magnificent 500 trees. That means in total we now have 6,500 in the ground, near Thringstone, Leicestershire.
Last Sunday armed with two ancient mowers, three ancient people, Simon Evans MBA, Darrell Taylor and Keith Cox we had prepared things. We had in affect grabbed a few hours to place all the canes in position to help with planting for the teams yesterday.
So on Friday we were delighted to welcome lots of people, these different customers of Document Network Services Limited to the site to plant trees. We started reasonably early in the morning, with sausage cobs, bacon cobs, teas and coffees from the local pub, THE GEORGE AND DRAGON (THRINGSTONE) LIMITED. Just the fuel that everybody needed.
Making our way to the field, we were excited to see such wonderful enthusiasm for the work that lay ahead.
Everybody without fail worked hard from the moment they set onto the field (after the safety briefing and instructions along with a planting demonstration), and low and behold just shy of two hours later we had 500 new silver birch trees occupying the field, looking great.
Thanks to our customers at Document Network Services Limited and their customers for being such great sports and getting stuck in with the planting, going above and beyond. We were amazed at the proficiency of the team, the fun they were having, and the excitement they obtained from planting.
We are so lucky to have such wonderful customers that totally understand the importance of getting involved in their sustainability journeys, making it happen through investing their time, people and money in the activity.
Thank you all.

Co-Treetment Review of 2024 | 2nd January 2025
It's that time of year when we reflect on our previous years activities, what we did, how we did it, and how it links to our customers and followers.
Added an additional 3,000 trees to our forest for our customers.
Retained our status as Carbon Negative company.
Broadened our Ecosystem by adding 5 bee-hives which were managed by Lisa McKenzie and David McDowell.
Funded FOUR MORE childrenās holidays at the Derbyshire Childrenās Holiday Centre; EIGHT in total since the projectās inception in 2022.
Created an ally partnership with The Uganda Environmental Conservationists Organization (UECO); planting 2,157 trees, visiting 23 schools and meeting 5,263 people.
Held planting sessions with AMG Wealth Management, BOAL UK Ltd, Midland Lead Ltd, MacMartin and Gravity Digital teams.
Increased the number of customers using our services by 10%.
Increased our LinkedIn followers base to more than 1,550 people; a 25% increase over the course of the year.
With 6,500 trees now planted the forest has absorbed an estimated 162.5 MT of CO2 from the atmosphere in 2024.
Primarily we recognise our responsibility to help protect the planet. We are committed to minimising the impact our firm has on the environment and supporting those who are working to improve global environmental sustainability.
We are extremely proud that Co-Treetment have moved from being Carbon Neutral (2022) and have been Carbon Negative since 2023.
Key elements in calculating our emissions profile are shown below:-
We only operate in the UK.
We have no buildings or offices.
We have no employees.
We have no company cars.
We all live approximately 25 miles from the field where we plant trees.
We have planted 250 trees to offset our emissions since 2023 (against a requirement of 146 to be Carbon Neutral) making us Carbon Negative. We are proud to be making positive improvements to our planet, and to enable others to do so, whilst being Carbon Negative and we very much look forward to more customer engagements in 2025 and beyond.

What a fantastic day in Co-Treetment's journey | 6th December 2024
The 6th December 2024 will go down as one of our best days at Co-Treetment as we were so fortunate to have great people joining us at our field to help in planting a magnificent 1,425 trees. That means in total we now have 6,000 in the ground, near Thringstone, Leicestershire.
To be able to achieve this we had to plan meticulously, order the tree whips, the canes and the spirals. That's just a few clicks on the keyboard, but important ones. We needed to cut the grass to make it easier to plant, measure the field for the tree locations and populate the locations with canes as markers.
So on Friday we were delighted to welcome different customers to the site to plant trees. We started reasonably early in the morning and worked through with a break for lunch until 4pm. Through their team efforts and additional planting from the Co-Treetment team, by the end of Friday we had 1,425 new silver birch trees were occupying the field, looking great.
Thanks to our customers at Gravity Digital (Sharon Stevens-Cash), MacMartin (Claire MacDonald) and Midland Lead Ltd (Francoise Derksen) for being such great sports and getting stuck in with the planting, going above and beyond.
A definite competitive, and friendly spirit was on show, especially from the Gravity Digital and MacMartin team, team who had a similar, but definitely not identical number planters present. In the end only 1 tree separated them in terms of numbers, 137 and 136 respectively, which is all the more amazing given there were only 9 people involved in total.
With Midland Lead Ltd arriving for planting later, and fielding a team of 30, buoyed up with mince pies, tea and coffee they managed to plant 1,038 trees before heading to the local hostelry for a well deserved buffet dinner.
We are so lucky to have such wonderful customers that totally understand the importance of getting involved in their sustainability journeys, making it happen through investing their time, people and money in the activity.
Thank you all.

Update from the field | Looking Good! Trees and Bees | 17th November 2024
Another Sunday and the weather was looking good, so Darrell Taylor and I headed off to the Co-Treetment field near Thringstone in Leicestershire. As everyone knows we really do take pride in maintaining our mini-forest, formerly known as a field!
So now with 4,500 trees residing in the ground at our land, around 55% of our 1.07 hectares are full now, so we have room for around another 4,250 trees, or thereabouts. We are already looking at the layout of the land to fathom where to plant next; where to leave access corridors and how we work around the bee hives to ensure easy access, and to not disturb them.
We were blown away to see what had happened since we began planting 4 years ago. Some trees sit at 6 metres (20ft) high.
We set about tidying up; focusing on checking the bee hives; the posts we had dividing the land; plaques and changing the tree guards on around 200 trees from black to clear. We had noticed a poor return on planting when using the black tree guards, our hypothesis being that the tree sees less light and heat in their crucial early growing days which stunts their growth.
We currently 9 area plots where there are batches of 100 trees or more belonging to single purchasers. The plots that we marked out during this time were:-

BOAL Extrusion UK

We have of course a lot of trees planted, in fact it is 756 now, that support the Derbyshire Childrenās Holiday Centre, which are dispersed amongst the various customer allocations. This is a tremendous number of trees that have so far helped to provide funds for 8 children to go to the holiday home in Skegness.

BEES and TREES | Oh no workers have been too enthusiastic! | Part 7 | 20th May 2024
On World Bee Day, what better way to celebrate than with non-other than an update on our hives that remain, remember now we have 3 of them. Thanks to Lisa we have some footage to share and I'll do my best to explain exactly what the bees are up to!
Let's remember that so far we have seen and shared:-
Video 1;
On 29th March they installed the apiary, some thing we attached in the post of that time.
Video 2; was one with some sad news about bee hive 1 on 25th April.
Video 3; 9th May we showed a solution to save our first hive which was in danger of being lost as there wasn't a Queen bee. So with the aid of newspaper, we were attempting a merge of hive 1 with hive 2.
Video 4; 16th May where we were able to see success in the merging of the hives.
Video 5; also 16th May - our slow motion special which focussed on the entrance to the hive; showing clearly the pollen laden workers (females), and some drones (males) with their rounded bottoms, black in colour) struggling to land.
Video 6; 11 frames for the bees with a dummy board, and where the bees persist in drawing out some extra comb, pulling it away from the internal frame.
For video 7 the workers made it look amazing, stunning in fact, but the naughty workers moved the play area! Take a look at the position of the homey-comb, a short clip on what can go wrong when the workers 'rebel' š
Videos 8 and 9 will follow later this week (we can only upload one video per post), and as everyone loves bees, we will make every attempt to follow up with even more bee stories.

For now are delighted to see that Lisa has turned a tragedy into success and we have a lot of bees, too many or not you might ask? Stick with that train of thought š as it can be dangerous to the whole bee colony to have too many bees living there.
