Hello everyone! Your resident manga fiend Cosmic Monkey is here to tell you about some new and notable titles here at the shop! This week, I want to recommend a rising star in the seinen and josei manga worlds, Kazumi Yamashita’s Wonder Boy!
A beautiful boy, possibly an angel using his powers to travel across time and space, is capable of transforming the minds of regular humans to seamlessly fit into any situation. His goal is to understand the hearts and minds of the humans he meets, to attempt to understand humanity’s true nature. He appears to all sorts of people: a Japanese family trying to rebuild after WWII, two men trying to survive the arctic in an expedition gone wrong, an ugly boy with the voice of an angel, two orphan girls in 19th century England fighting for upward mobility. He does this to insert himself into their conflicts. The boy doesn’t necessarily help solve people’s problems, but guides them to a point where they can observe their greater place in the world. Kazumi Yamashita’s swooping, adept brush work is capable of capturing so many emotions and facial expressions. With her ability to tell diverse and complex stories about betrayal, love, justice, relationships, and history, Yamashita is able to make the history of human-kind feels vast… and also incredibly close.
