Samba is a Brazilian rhythm traditionally played in 2/4, built on syncopation and flow thatâs what gives it that unique feel.
Many of these patterns already exist, but I like to adapt them and add my own personality, so it doesnât sound mechanical or the same every time.
In this video, Iâm showing my approach to samba and pagode on the drum set, simple ideas that can help you start understanding the feel of this rhythm.

Today Iâm playing 16th notes with accent variations and doubles, moving the accents across different notes of the 16th-note grid.
Itâs a simple idea to practice, but it creates a really cool musical effect and helps develop control and dynamics on the kit.
Try it slow, move the accents around, and feel how the groove changes.

đSamba is one of the most beautiful and challenging rhythm ms to play on the drum set.
In this variation Iâm using a tamborim idea (the traditional âtelecotecoâ pattern) in the hands.
The bass drum plays an ostinato on the 1st and 4th 16th-notes, while the left foot marks the offbeats.
This creates that classic Brazilian samba independence and flow.
