“Indistinct and vague, yet within it there is form.” — Chapter 21, Tao Te Ching, Laozi Negative space is a core aesthetic principle in Chinese art—not merely a compositional tool, but a reflection of traditional Chinese thought on nature, knowledge, and ethics. It values the spontaneous and the spiritual over literal form—a foundational idea in Chinese visual culture, resonating with the poetic ideal of “words ending, but meaning lingering.” Contemporary abstract art, through formal experimentation, tension-building, and material innovation, revitalizes this principle. Artist Han Qingzhen engages in a rigorous cross-cultural dialogue, firmly situating the philosophical essence of negative space within the discursive and material frameworks of contemporary abstraction. In doing so, she develops a distinctive system of aesthetic translation. Qingzhen uses thick, textured plaster as both a surface and an active compositional element. Gestures rooted in classical Chinese calligraphy—such as ti’an (lifting and pressing), kūrùn (dry-moistness), and dùncuò (pause and redirection)—unfold freely on this surface, unconstrained by rigid rules. Lines flow intuitively; layered colors oscillate between presence and absence; curved forms remain open and unstable, echoing the fluid nature of perception itself. The image is no longer a fixed picture. Color interacts and transforms; space is built stroke by stroke; every mark records action, time, and choice. Forms are always in a state of becoming—briefly visible, then already shifting. Individual visual fragments coalesce across the space to form an open, contemplative field. As visitors engage with the works, their gazes move across overlapping planes, sharing with the artist the real-time making, shifting, and remaking of space. This is not merely a display of artworks. It is a shared act of perception: a space where Qingzhen and visitors together explore negative space—a ground for seeing, thinking, and connecting. - @hanqingzhen_studio @11_contemporary - Curatorial Team: Sai Wang, Wally Yo, Chloe Li, Ziyin Ding, Catherine

“I use abstraction to record lived experience and perception. I focus on the act of making, not on telling a story.” - The solo exhibition Void · Vision by artist Han Qingzhen is now officially open to the public. “Incorporating diverse materials into the creative process brings me profound enjoyment. While enriching the painting experience with greater engagement, it also amplifies the explorability and uncertainty inherent in artistic practice. Even as the final results alternate between pleasant surprises and unforeseen setbacks, I savour every challenge for the unique growth and artistic resonance it brings.” - Lull, 2025 61.2 x 91.2cm Mixed Media on canvas @yishiland @11_contemporary @corridor_foundation - #art #painting #contemporaryart #femaleartist #exhibition #artexhibition

“For me, any artwork that does not originate on a physical canvas is considered a preliminary sketch. Such sketches may take the form of line drawings, color studies, or brief written notes. Excluding fully realized final works, the majority of my creative process is devoted to developing these preliminary sketches.” - Pages on the Meadow, 2025 40 x 40cm Mixed Media @yishiland @11_contemporary Courtesy of the artist, Corridor Foundation - #art #painting #contemporaryart #femaleartist #exhibition #artexhibition

“I have long admired a wide range of artists whose work has significantly shaped my aesthetic perspective and creative approach. Beyond well-known figures like Yoshitomo Nara, Sanyu, and David Hockney, I’ve recently focused on: Ikegami Yoriyuki, Milton Avery, Sibylle von Olfers, and Kosuke Ajiro. Ikegami Yoriyuki and Sibylle von Olfers are illustrators whose visual storytelling I study closely. Milton Avery has deeply influenced my use of color, especially his minimalist palette to express mood and form. Kosuke Ajiro reinterprets ancient narrative forms—such as medieval scrolls, tapestries, and folk myths—into a light, whimsical yet information-rich visual style. His work, playful on the surface but rich in symbolism and emotion, inspires me to blend history and deeper meaning into my own art while keeping a childlike expression.” - We Met Beneath the Surface, 2025 40 x 40cm Acrylic on wood @yishiland @11_contemporary Courtesy of the artist, Corridor Foundation - #art #painting #contemporaryart #femaleartist #exhibition #artexhibition

“I regularly engage in small-scale color drawings as an integral part of my artistic practice. The primary objective is to swiftly establish the overall color atmosphere and determine appropriate color coordination for my artistic creation. I prefer using oil pastels or crayons as my drawing tools due to their efficient application and direct expressive qualities, which facilitate rapid visual exploration. In specific lighting conditions—such as during dusk when the sky exhibits a deep blue-black hue with subtle traces of pale purple clouds—photographic equipment often fails to accurately capture the full sensory impression. In such instances, I consistently record these fleeting moments through small-scale color drawings, effectively preserving the chromatic mood and atmospheric quality of the scene.” - Starry Sea, 2025 90 x 90cm Acrylic on canvas @yishiland @corridor_foundation Courtesy of the artist, Corridor Foundation - #art #painting #contemporaryart #femaleartist #exhibition #artexhibition

“Life has provided me with substantial creative inspiration, drawn from time spent with family, travel experiences, and documentaries on wildlife. During travels or outings, I often use drawing as a means of documenting artistic inspiration. From 2021 to 2023, I consistently carried portable drawing tools and produced numerous drawing vlogs. This period significantly influenced the development of my artistic style. In recent years, due to major life changes and increased time constraints, both drawing practice and vlog production have declined. When circumstances permit, I plan to resume creating drawing vlogs.” - Lean, 2025 90 x 120cm Mixed media on canvas @yishiland @11_contemporary Courtesy of the artist, Corridor Foundation - #art #painting #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #femaleartist #corridorfoundation

“During my undergraduate studies in animation, I consistently engaged in character training. The way we learned in the program really helped me develop my sense of storytelling and visual rhythm in my artistic creations. Nature and animals have always been super important to me—they’re kind of the heart of what I create. Being out in nature makes me feel how small humans really are, and looking at animals reminds me how fragile we can be. I have long aspired to imbue my imagery with dynamic expressiveness. Although current constraints of time and energy prevent me from fully realizing these works in animated form, this objective continues to serve as a key direction for my future creative development.” - Tiny Breeze, 2025 40x40cm Mixed media @yishiland @11_contemporary Courtesy of the artist, Corridor Foundation - #art #painting #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #femaleartist #corridorfoundation

“Since I can remember, I have been consistently engaged in drawing. During my early years, I studied traditional Chinese painting, and in middle school, I began formal training in drawing and painting. Driven by a strong passion for animation, I pursued undergraduate studies in the Arts of Animation program at the Beijing Film Academy. Coming from a small city, I initially perceived drawing as the essence of art. However, after entering university and being exposed to contemporary art exhibitions, I gradually came to understand that art is not confined to a single medium or form, but can be expressed through diverse modes of practice. This realization deeply intrigued me, prompting me to further my studies by enrolling in the Fine Arts program at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.” - Journeys unfold in many forms, each equally tender, each equally luminous.(2025) 80x60cm Acrylic on Canvas - Courtesy of the artist,Corridor Foundation - Yishi‘s Solo Exhibition “Possible Words: A More Lovely Reality” - @yishiland @11_contemporary #contemporaryart #artist #contemporaryart #artcollection #collection
