Praa Sands Beach: Praa Sands beach sites about halfway between Penzance and Helston on Cornwall's south coast. One of Cornwall's favourite surf spots there was little evidence of waves on this lovely June afternoon. The photo was taken from about halfway along the beach. This is generally the quietest part as it is the furthest away from any car parking and access points. Not that there were many people on the beach this day. #praa sands #beach #cornwall #cornwallGuide #kernow

Springtime in Sennen: A carpet of pink sea thrift (Armeria maritima) leading down to the "Moomin Hut" in Sennen Cove. Not sure what it's really called, but this little black, octagonal hut has one of the best locations anywhere. In the distance you can see the recognisable hump of Cape Cornwall - made all the more recognisable by the chimney which sits on top. #sennen #sennen cove #spring #flower #cape cornwall #hut #cornwall #cornwallGuide #kernow

Gwithian cave view: The view from a cave in the cliffs at Gwithian beach, near Hayle. Set on an otherwise unbroken stretch of sand backed by dunes, the cliffs rise up at Gwithian creating some interesting rock formations. Along with this cave there are a couple of sea stacks and a tunnel through the rocks. The latter may have been mad-made as there are some old mine workings here. In the distance you can see Trencrom Hill to the centre and Carbis Bay to the right. #cave #gwithian #beach #cornwall #cornwallGuide #kernow

Longships Lighthouse - Stormy Sunset: The view west from Land's End on a blowy, early autumn evening. The Longships are a group of seven rocks lying around a mile off the coast. You'd be unlucky to strike the rocks themselves, but this whole area is treacherous with thousands of ships having gone down here over the centuries. When there's a storm you would want to be as far away as possible - which is why there is a lighthouse here. The current lighthouse dates back to 1873. It is taller than the original 1795 structure, the light of which could become obscured by high waves. In the olden days there would have been two keepers in the lighthouse. However, since 1988 it has been automated. #lighthouse #longships #longships lighthouse #sunset #lands end #cornwall #cornwallGuide #kernow

Garrison Gate and cottages: Built in the 1700s, the Garrison Gate provided a fortified gateway on the western edge of Hugh Town, marking the entrance to the Garrison Walls. Built as part of a fortification designed to protect the Scilly Isles from invasion, it features an archway, guard house, and gate house and is positioned on the route up to Star Castle. #isles of scilly #scilly isles #st marys #hugh town #gatehouse #cornwall #cornwallGuide #kernow

View to Town Beach - St Mary's: Looking down Garrison Hill in Hugh Town, towards Town Beach, which also serves as the harbour. The beach here is actually pretty nice, especially towards the far end. But given this is the Isles of Scilly there are better options, just a stone's throw away. In the distance you can make out the blocky tower of St Mary's church and on the left, the lifeboat station. #isles of scilly #scilly isles #st marys #beach #harbour #hugh town #cornwall #cornwallGuide #kernow

Gooses: A flock of geese spotted over Marazion Marshes. I think these are probably Canada geese, but it's hard to tell from just silhouettes. These, and other birds, flock to the marshes in the early autumn to over-winter. #bird #marazion marsh #silhouette #cornwall #cornwallGuide #kernow

Longrock evening sun: Looking east at the point Marazion beach becomes Longrock beach. One of the last lovely summer's evenings of the year. #longrock #marazion #beach #sunset #cornwall #cornwallGuide #kernow

Glistening Inkcap: Can't resist photographing any fungus I spot. This one is Glistening Inkcap (Coprinus micaceus) which can be found growing in dense clusters on rotting wood. The light brown caps are often covered in tiny mica-like granules that sparkle in sunlight (hence "glistening"). Like other inkcaps, the gills turn from pale to black and then dissolve into a black inky liquid as the spores mature. It appears from spring through to autumn, sometimes in large troops after rain. #fungus #cornwall #cornwallGuide #kernow

Door in the cliff - Great Western beach: This doorway in the cliffs marks the entrance to the historic disused tunnel leading from Great Western Beach to the Hotel Victoria. Initially a lift connected every floor of the hotel to the bathing beach below. It was claimed to be the only one in England. The Victoria Hotel was built in 1899, just after the Great Western Hotel in 1879. Before that the beach was known as Bothwick Sands, gradually becoming known as Great Western Beach. In recent years there have been issues with rock falls around the tunnel entrance, and access has been restricted on occasion. #newquay #beach #cliff #door #cornwall #cornwallGuide #kernow

Quay and Castle - St Michael's Mount: A while back, I did half promise myself not to post anymore photos of St Michael's Mount. Anyway, I'm justifying this as it is a slightly unusual view. Taken from a boat, this shot takes in the cottages that line the quay, and make up most of the "village" on the island. One thing that is particularly striking about the photo is the complete lack of people! That's because, despite it being a July afternoon, it was a Saturday, and the Mount is closed on Saturdays... #st michaels mount #marazion #harbour #quayside #cornwall #cornwallGuide #kernow

Wood Ear Fungus: Not sure of the exact species of this fungus, but it is definitely one of the wood ear family - Genus Auricularia. These fungus are all gelatinous and vaguely ear-shaped, with a slightly downy covering. The most common of these is the "jelly ear" fungus (Auricularia auricula-judae), which this probably is - butI'm no expert... #fungus #cornwall #cornwallGuide #kernow
