Ceramicist @harriet_ceramics was inspired to create a collection of ceramics following a trip around Svalbard in 2024. The body of work for the exhibition, The Weight of Light, is an immersive response to the Arctic landscape — “an articulation of edges, transitions, and the layering of time.” "It took a long time to process the experience of being in that incredible environment, where everyday I was surrounded by the most amazing and beautiful natural sculptures." says Harriet. "At the start of our trip I got excited when a few small icebergs floated past - by the end they were towering above us!" You can see Harriet’s work alongside salt water prints by Charles Binns and maps and notebooks charting their trip, in the Spotlight Gallery until 13 Sept. #arcticcircleartistresidency #svalbard #ceramics #cornwallmuseum

Morning Light, St Ives Robert Borlase Smart (1881–1947) Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery Oil on canvas Borlase Smart captures the harbour at its most luminous — a quiet study in shifting light, sea air, and the stillness of early day. Smart had a gift for translating Cornwall’s coastal atmosphere into paint, and here St Ives appears both immediate and gently timeless. Born in Devon and trained in London before studying under Julius Olsson in St Ives, Smart became one of the town’s most active artistic figures. He was not only a painter of seascapes and architectural views, but also a central force in shaping St Ives’ creative community — serving as Secretary of the St Ives Arts Club and later helping organise the St Ives Society of Artists. Beyond the canvas, Smart’s life was deeply tied to service: as a camouflage instructor in the First World War, as a town councillor in St Ives, and as one of the key figures behind the town’s artistic identity in the early 20th century. Morning Light, St Ives reflects that deep connection to place — an artist painting not just a harbour, but the town he helped define. . . . #RobertBorlaseSmart #StIves #Cornwall #CornishArt #ArtHistory @cornwall_museum

Today’s #OnlineArtExchange theme is Myths & Legends in connection with the exhibition, Cornish Myths & Legends at @cornwall_museum 🧜🏽‍♀️👸 This painting by Elizabeth Forbes is called ‘A Dream Princess’. Forbes blended Pre-Raphaelite inspiration with working-class subjects, and many of her figures were costumed in medieval clothing. Here a fairytale princess enchants a farm worker in his sleep, in a scene that borrows strongly from Arthurian legend. Forbes was originally from Canada but she settled in Newlyn where, alongside her husband Stanhope Forbes, she helped establish the Newlyn Art School. – 'A Dream Princess' by Elizabeth Adela Forbes (1859–1912) 📷 Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery #CornwallMuseum #MythsAndLegends #ArtHistory #ArtLovers

Have you heard? A new study has shown that visiting museums is great for our health, helping us stay biologically younger for longer! 🩺 The museum here in Truro is a place for our communities to meet, discover, celebrate and play. We’re busy working up plans for the final phase of the museum’s transformation, following the award of £440,000 development funding from @heritagefunduk . We’re designing spaces to connect, relax, inspire, and nurture wellbeing, and putting them right at the heart of the museum experience. #cornwallmuseum #NLHF #cornwallartgallery #truro

Richard Lander’s Medicine Chest 🩺 If you like everything stored in its proper place, this one’s for you! In 1830 the Lander brothers of Truro went to find the source of the Niger River – it’s thought they were the first Europeans to do so. This medicine chest, which still has its labels and much of the contents, was an essential piece of kit for their travels. Spot the Laudanum (clearly labelled ‘poison!’) and the Rhubarb Pills – a natural remedy for constipation apparently… #cornishhistory #cornwallmuseum #adventuroustravel

Opening tomorrow, The Weight of Light is an exhibition featuring salt water prints by Charles Binns, alongside ceramics by Harriet Hellman. Charles employs alternative printing processes to infuse his work with the physical essence of the landscapes he captures. For this exhibition, he has created salt prints using seawater collected from the Arctic Ocean, using simple plastic and pinhole cameras to record the landscapes of the Arctic. A trip to the exhibition immerses you in this incredible landscape – the next best thing to a trip to Svalbard itself! Exhibition continues until 13 Sept. #cornwallmuseum #arcticcircle #svalbard #artistresidency #printmaking
