For 50 years Corky Lee tirelessly documented the celebrations, struggles and daily lives of the AAPI community. This film serves as a tribute and testament to the importance of his life’s work. The screening will be followed by an informal discussion about the film and Corky’s legacy between Director Jennifer Takaki and Executive Producer George Hirose. Corky Lee was vital to the Japanese American community, photographing many events and helping to connect people and community leaders. Audience members are kindly invited to join the conversation. There will also be a reception with light food and drinks after the Q&A. Everyone is invited! Please RSVP by May 15th to [email protected] with “RSVP Corky Film” in the subject line.

“The U.S. Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Asian Pacific American Museum of History & Culture” needs your help! The commission is seeking to create a blueprint to build a feature museum that would hopefully be located on the National Mall in Washington DC, but they have only until October of this year. To help build out this plan, the commission is going on tour seeking input from local communities around the US. Over the next few weeks they will be visiting cities like Honolulu, Ann Arbor, New Haven, Houston, etc. They’d love to hear from you, let’s help them make this happen! For a full list of cities and how to attend, visit their Eventbrite page here: /o/111653695871

Happy Holi! Known as the “Festival of Love”, this Hindu festival celebrates the eternal and divine love of the deities Radha and Krishna and people get to unite together forgetting all resentments and all types of bad feeling towards each other. The day signifies the triumph of good over evil, as it commemorates the victory of Vishnu as Narasimha over Hiranyakashipu.

Today is The Day of Remembrance for Japanese Americans. On this day in 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which gave the U.S. Army the authority to forcefully remove Japanese Americans from the West Coast in Washington, Oregon, and California during WWII. This meant that over 95% of the Japanese population in the US was evacuated and put into internment camps located in barren areas across the US. Here is a photo Corky took, years later, of a group of JA’s at a Day of Remembrance event in NYC.
