If you’re new here or you’ve been following for a while and don’t know the full story, here it is. I grew up moving constantly. 9 primary schools. Commission housing. Sleeping on fold-out camping beds. A single mum doing her best. I didn’t know who my father was until a week before my son was born. I didn’t have a blueprint. I had a choice… let it define me, or use it as fuel. I chose fuel. I found the gym at 16 and started training with real intent at 21. Since then I’ve competed in bodybuilding, played American football, run Tough Mudders, Spartans, trail runs, a half marathon and now I’m working toward powerlifting. In 2018, I started DVS. Not because it was the safe move because it was the right one. I work with serious gym-goers and athletes who want to perform better, move without restriction, and build a body that holds up to the demands they put on it. Remedial Massage — in person, Ballarat. Does your lower back feel tight during or after deadlifts? Here’s a common mistake? The hips shooting up first. You set up, you pull, and your hips rise before the bar moves. Your legs straighten out, your back rounds, and you end up doing a stiff-legged, lower-back-dominant pull. I know because I’ve personally done it so many times. And I’m spending time trying to fix this. Why does this happen? Sometimes it’s just a bad setup. You’re starting with your hips too low, trying to squat the weight up instead of hinging. But often, it’s a tissue problem. If your hamstrings are glued down and your calves are locked up, you physically can’t maintain tension in the bottom position. Your body shoots the hips up to find a position where it can actually generate force. In the massage room, I see this constantly. A lifter comes in with lower back pain, and we find that their hamstrings are like guitar strings. We relieve the hamstrings tension. We mobilize the posterior chain and hip capsule. We give them the physical capacity to hold the right position. If you can’t hold your setup, you can’t pull your deadlift safely. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t risk it or lower the weight. Bracing correctly is also another factor but thats another topic. Do your hips shoot up when you deadlift? “My lower back always hurts when I deadlift.” I hear this often. A lifter comes in, points to their lumbar spine, and asks me to fix it. Here’s the truth: your lower back isn’t the problem. Your lower back is just the victim. The deadlift is a hip hinge. It requires your glutes and hamstrings to do the heavy lifting, and your core to stabilize the spine. But what happens when your hips are locked up? What happens when your glutes are completely shut off from sitting at a desk all day? Your body still has to move the weight. So it finds the path of least resistance. It bypasses the hips and forces the lower back to do the work. Your erectors aren’t designed to be the primary movers in a heavy deadlift. When you force them to be, they scream at you. When I treat a lifter with lower back pain from deadlifting, I rarely spend the whole session rubbing their lower back. We go after the hips. We release the hip flexors. We unglue the glutes. We restore the mechanics of the hinge. And then if I get a chance we get them back to the bar and teach them how to actually use their hips. Everyone thinks the bench press is just a chest and tricep exercise. If you want to bench heavy without breaking down, it’s a full-body lift. And the most important muscles are the ones you can’t see in the mirror. Your lats and your serratus anterior are what stabilize your shoulder blades. They are the brakes that control the bar on the way down, and the platform you press off on the way up. If your lats are locked up, you can’t pull your shoulder blades back and down into a safe arch. If your serratus is glued down, your scapula can’t move properly, and your shoulder joint takes the hit. When powerlifters come to me with bench press issues, I rarely spend the whole session working on their pecs. We spend the time ungluing their lats, releasing their serratus, and restoring the mechanics of their upper back. If your upper back is tight, your bench press is weak. It’s that simple.
