O leme (normalmente) é o capitão da canoa, responsável pela segurança da canoa e tripulação.
Um bom Leme antecipa as condições (ventos, ondulações, correntes) procurando fazer poucas correções e menos bruscas possíveis durante a navegação.
Motivação: Se necessário, ele chama a mudança na cadência da remada e ajuda a manter a equipe motivada durante o treino e provas.
Segurança: Antes de entrar no mar, checa se a canoa está bem amarrada, se o balde está ok, bailers, coletes, rota mais segura...
Leitura de mar: Responsável por fazer a leitura da ondulação, procurando o melhor caminho, surfando e proporcionando um melhor deslize da canoa.

The steersman is the captain of the canoe (usually), responsible for the safety and health of the entire crew.
A good steerer anticipates water conditions (wind, current, waves) and makes small, frequent corrections rather than large, slow ones, which slows down the boat.
Motivation: They call out changes in stroke rate, encourage the crew, and keep morale high, especially during races.
Safety Check: Before heading out, they check the rigging, ensure there are bailers on board, and assess if the weather conditions are safe for the crew's skill level.
Wave Management: In open ocean, the steerer reads the ocean to guide the canoe onto waves (downwind/surfing), providing the "glide".
